I. Introduction
Guarding the North is a series of serious fantasy novels written by Yang Chen.
Defending the North mainly describes a series of stories of court struggles, battles, adventures and magical confrontation in a fictional medieval world. In content and style, Shoubei is a mirror of real life and a true portrayal of human nature. In writing techniques, the narrative method of alternately exchanging the third-person viewpoints of characters is adopted to tell the story, thus promoting the progress of the story.
But as far as the color of "magic" is concerned, magic is never easily used in novels, so that it is only an element needed to render the atmosphere of novels and will never be used on people.
Few of the protagonists in "Defending the North" know magic. They are just like us in real life. No one can come back to life with the help of magic and completely abide by the laws of human life in reality. Therefore, some people think that Guarding the North is more like a parallel historical novel of fictional world than an extremely "low magic" fantasy novel.
Second, the content
The first main line revolves around the story of the "game of power" dynasty struggle of the iron throne, the power center of the whole kingdom. The five volumes published mainly describe the great civil war that broke out throughout Westeros-the battle of the five kings and the infighting among the major families.
The storyline mainly starts from the viewpoints of many members of the Stark family and the Lannister family (referring to the York family and house of lancaster in wars of the roses respectively), and there are also narratives of some characters of other families. This story line is the most written one, and it is also the main theme of the whole novel series.
