This poem was written in August of 761 AD (the second year of the Yuan Dynasty by Emperor Suzong of the Tang Dynasty). In the autumn of 759 AD (the second year of Emperor Suzong's reign in the Tang Dynasty), Du Fu abandoned his official position and went to Qinzhou (now Tianshui, Gansu), and then passed through Tonggu (now Chengxian, Gansu) to Baling. In the spring of 760 AD (the third year of Qianyuan), Du Fu asked relatives and friends to build a thatched hut by Huanhua Creek in Chengdu, finally having a shelter.
Unexpectedly, in August of 761 AD (the second year of the Yuan Dynasty), strong winds damaged the house and heavy rain followed. At that time, the Anshi Rebellion had not yet subsided, and the poet thought of all the difficulties he had experienced since the war. He could not sleep for a long night and was filled with emotions, so he wrote this popular poem.
