Poetry review:
The hypothetical prediction of "doomsday judgment" in the Christian classic New Testament is ridiculous even for those of us who lack "religious sense". But for westerners and Christians full of the spirit of "guilt culture", it is really serious.
Christianity believes that when the "end of the world" comes, the whole world will be judged by God. The Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament describes the scene of judgment: Christ sits on the glorious throne and all the people gather before him. The king said to the righteous on his right, "Come and inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world.". And the king said to the men on his left, Go into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. In other words, people who do bad things will be punished forever, while pious and kind people will get eternal life.
Xu Zhimo is one of the most westernized modern writers, and his familiarity with and admiration for western civilization is self-evident. In this last day, Xu Zhimo borrowed the allusions about "Doomsday Judgment" from the Bible, created an idealized and imaginative situation with the language and form of poetry, and entrusted and expressed his yearning and praise for pure, beautiful and free love.
The first section depicts the dark and horrible scene of the "last day": the spring breeze is no longer coming back, the dead branches are no longer green, the sun, moon, stars and other luminous bodies have lost their light, and the whole sky is dark and chaotic. The poet tried his best to highlight an unusual day, naturally in order to compare the different moods of two people in front of this scene. Bad people can only be scared, but good people can be very calm.
The second section further describes the unusual things that will happen that day-"revaluation". On that day, all the old, accustomed and even unshakable values in reality must be re-evaluated and even completely overthrown. In the majesty of this "final judgment", everyone is equal before a just and severe God. Every soul is naked and cannot be concealed. Completely exposed to God, there is no so-called wealth, status and power, and there is no so-called "benevolence", "virtue" and "loyalty and filial piety". Many commentators have pointed out that Xu Zhimo's poetry creation is weaker than the association and description of real life-related things, and longer than the chic and ethereal imagination. This feature is really enough to glimpse the leopard in this poem.
In the first and second sections, the poetry is not very strong. After the realistic image setting and description, the author turned to the ethereal imagination and chic love description that he is best at in the third section. At that time, the "heart of you and me", which has been criticized and wronged in real life and cannot be openly and freely in love, is like a snow-white ice flute lotus on the green stalk of love/beautiful, happy and beautiful. Here, the poet compares two loving "hearts" to "ice love", turning the virtual reality into reality, making "Snow White" not only decorate the "ice love", but also symbolize the sacredness of love between you and me. Xu Zhimo is a poet who always wants to "fly" and always wants to "fly out of this circle, fly out of this circle!" This naturally reflects Xu Zhimo's fantasy of being divorced from reality and his weakness in facing reality to a certain extent. However, after all, art cannot be completely equated with reality. From a certain point of view, art is the supplement and sublimation of reality, and the beautiful ideal that cannot be realized in reality can be realized and compensated in art. Isn't this the essence of romantic creation method?
