When is the Chinese Ghost Festival?

The Chinese Ghost Festival falls on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month every year.

According to legend, every year starting from the first day of the seventh lunar month, the King of Hell orders the gates of hell to be opened, allowing those unjust souls and ghosts who have been suffering and imprisoned in hell all year round to come out of hell, gain a short-term wandering, and enjoy human blood. Therefore, people call July the ghost month. This month is considered unlucky and people do not marry or move.

This day is also China’s annual “Ghost Festival”, the Ghost Festival, which is called the “Ollan Festival” in Buddhism. During this period, it is popular among the people to worship and summon the souls of their dead relatives, burn money ingots, paper candles, put out river lanterns, and perform rituals to pray for the blessings of their ancestors, to eliminate disasters and increase blessings, or to save the souls of the dead and resolve grievances.
