Urban charm of Greenland

Greenland has been a mythical country since ancient times. Explorers brought all kinds of bizarre legends from the frozen north: furry dwarfs, magical unicorns, the hometown of ice ... This remote island has become the source of all fantasies and mysteries. From Virgil in ancient Rome to Longfellow in the United States, Greenland is always the most beautiful poem; From ancient Nordic folk songs to rock bands in the 1970s, stories in the ice and snow have been sung by countless people. Even highly developed modern science cannot make these myths lose their luster. Greenland is still mysterious: dazzling aurora, endless tundra, twinkling icicles, strange icebergs, almost extremely cold and almost silent Inuit.

Greenland and Denmark mean "green land", but in fact, white is the basic color of the island. About three-quarters of the island's surface is covered with ice and snow, and its total ice sheet area is second only to Antarctica. The weight of the ice caused the middle part of the island to sink, forming a basin 360 meters below sea level. The island is dotted with towering icicles, and glaciers slide into the sea and separate into strange icebergs. If one day, all the ice and snow on the island melt, then the coastal cities all over the world will become huge swimming pools in the city.

Greenland is the largest island in the world, with an area of 2175,600 square kilometers, which is 54,559 square kilometers more than the combined area of New Guinea, kalimantan island and Madagascar ranked second, third and fourth. It looks like a witch's magic shoe, with its heel facing the North Pole and its toes poking into the Atlantic Ocean. The rare landforms on the island and its proximity to the North Pole have created many spectacular natural scenes. Among them, aurora and mirage are the most magical. Aurora is produced by solar particles breaking into the earth's magnetic field and rubbing against the atmosphere. On winter nights, light green and light rose curtains are flying over the island, which is amazing. Aurora is a real spectacle, but a mirage is an illusion, which is caused by the reflection of water, ice and snow. Inverse temperature may form a clear illusion that does not exist. This may also be the reason for the emergence of ice cities and green forests in early adventure stories.

Greenland also has a mysterious underwater world. Can you imagine that there is a huge underwater waterfall at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and Greenland, with a drop of 3,500 meters, which is four times higher than the highest waterfall on land, Angel Waterfall?

Oceanographers came across this waterfall while measuring the sea water velocity along the coast of Greenland. When scientists sank the current meter to the bottom of the sea, the current meter was washed away by the powerful water. Later, it was found that the rapid current here was caused by a large amount of seawater pouring down from the submarine cliffs. The waterfall is about 200 meters wide and 200 meters deep. It is estimated that as many as 5 billion liters of seawater pour down from underwater cliffs every second. The amount of water is amazing, equivalent to 25 times that of all Amazon water flowing into the ocean in one second.

Scientists also found that this underwater waterfall also has a wonderful effect of controlling the temperature and salinity of ocean water. Just like the circulation of water in a pot, if one end of the pot is heated and the other end is cold, the cold water at the cold end will quickly sink to the bottom of the pot and spread to the hot end. If there is a "submarine mountain range" or "ridge" at the bottom of the pot, a lot of cold water will accumulate behind the ridge, and eventually the cold water will overflow and form a waterfall. Because the spilled cold water will be mixed with hot water and spread rapidly, the underwater waterfall can make the low-temperature salty seawater in the Arctic sea flow to the warm area near the equator.

Regrettably, as of 20 14, humans have not witnessed this underwater spectacle. The cold in Greenland is beyond imagination. The average temperature in central Leng Yue is minus 43 degrees Celsius, and the absolute minimum temperature reaches minus 70 degrees Celsius, making it the second "cold pole" on earth after Antarctica. However, there is still a brave life in such a harsh environment. In summer, in the lowlands of southern Greenland, wild flowers are covered with Yuan Ye like colored carpets-chrysanthemums, dandelions, blue bells, arctic poppies and wild strawberries. Although most of the vegetation in Greenland in ............................................................................................................................... is short, it survives tenaciously. The bad climate not only limits the species of animals, but also creates new species. On the ice sheet, reindeer, musk oxen, polar bears, lemmings and arctic foxes always pass by. Under the blue water, fierce killer whales (killer whales), beautiful beluga whales, rare narwhals, and countless seals and walrus families share delicious food.

For a long time, the ancient Inuit and later Greenland immigrants mainly lived by fishing and hunting, and the fishing and hunting industry accounted for almost 80% of their total economic income. In recent decades, Greenpeace's position of "opposing the killing of seals and whales" once almost completely destroyed the economic base of Greenland, especially the economy of the northern region, which is dominated by fishing and hunting. Later, Greenpeace realized the plight of Greenland. Today, Greenland allows fishing and hunting to survive, but the contradiction between environmental protection and traditional lifestyle still exists. Due to global warming and the influx of new immigrants, environmental problems have become increasingly obvious. There is new evidence that the ice sheet in Greenland is melting faster than before. This is undoubtedly a dangerous signal for all mankind.
