In this poem, Zhou Enlai is determined to oppose imperialism all his life. Ironically, the country from which Zhou Enlai is going to learn something new and modern is a country that humiliated China more arbitrarily than Europeans and will soon invade China further.
Zhou attaches great importance to his determination in poetry. 18 months later, he copied this poem to his friends in Japan as a warning and as "his own warning".
Zhou Enlai may travel north, passing through Shenyang where he once stayed, passing through North Korea, and arriving in Japan in September of 19 17. He met Wu, an old friend who came to pick him up in Kobe Port, and then rushed to Tokyo to register at East Asia Preparatory School. In this school, he can learn Japanese and review for the entrance examination for teachers' colleges, because he plans to be a teacher in the future. There are 350 students in the school, all of whom are from China.
As long as he completes the course of the preparatory school for higher education, Zhou Enlai will receive financial support from the China government. However, he never finished the course. Although he apparently took part in some courses at Waseda University and possibly other universities informally, he could not be formally admitted to Japanese universities. He may have studied in the Japanese-French Law School, because after a long time he said he stayed there for a year.
Although Zhou Enlai succeeded in getting financial aid from his friends, his life in Japan is still poor, and accommodation is still a problem. The 4,000 China students studying in Japan have already filled the accommodation prepared for them. However, Zhou Enlai still got help from a Japanese woman, and many China students called her godmother.
She solves various problems for China students, helps them to wash clothes, and even serves as a consultant for their love and marriage. With the help of this kind woman, Zhou Enlai solved the accommodation problem and lived with two China students in a carpenter's house upstairs. It is next to a cinema, not far from the school.
