Wu Ziniu’s film, "Evening Bell".
In the autumn of 1945, Japan announced its unconditional surrender. In a Japanese military camp in northern China, rows of Japanese soldiers knelt on their knees, poured gasoline on their bodies, and set themselves on fire collectively amid the sound of machine gunfire. A platoon leader of the Eighth Route Army led four soldiers to bury the bodies of their comrades on the battlefield, and also buried the bodies of Japanese soldiers together. Later, they found a starving Japanese soldier in a ruined temple, and learned that there were 32 Japanese soldiers guarding a secret arsenal in a cave not far away. They had been without food for many days and were on the verge of death. The platoon leader led his soldiers to surround the cave and ordered the Japanese soldiers to shout. A group of Japanese soldiers who looked like they were starving to death staggered out under the leadership of the sergeant. The Eighth Route Army soldiers took out all the food around them, and the Japanese soldiers devoured it. Suddenly, a skinny Chinese female worker staggered out of the cave and was shot by a Japanese lieutenant hiding in the cave. The platoon leader risked his life to save her. As she was dying, she revealed that the Japanese army had kidnapped four workers. One of them had been brutally killed and eaten, and he died immediately after speaking. The platoon leader sternly ordered the Japanese troops to hand over the Chinese and surrender. After the Japanese lieutenant was forced to hand over two dying Chinese, he ordered all Japanese troops to commit mass suicide. The next day, the Japanese lieutenant led the Japanese troops to gather at the entrance of the cave. At the same time, he secretly arranged for the sergeant to stay in the cave and detonate arms. At the critical moment of life and death, the sergeant went crazy due to a mental breakdown. He walked out of the cave and left laughing. The lieutenant had no choice but to commit seppuku on the spot, and the rest of the Japanese troops laid down their weapons and surrendered. The secret arsenal was eventually blown up. At the sound of the evening bell, an old farmer wielded a sharp ax and struggled to cut off the wooden stakes of the Japanese artillery tower, causing the artillery tower to collapse suddenly.
