Poetry background

"Gift to Wang Lun" was written by Li Bai, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty, when he visited Peach Blossom Pond in Jing County (now Wannan, Anhui). A farewell poem written to Wang Lun, a local friend. The first two lines of this poem describe the scene of Wang Lun coming to see Li Bai off by singing songs when Li Bai was about to leave. They simply and naturally express Wang Lun's simple and sincere feelings for Li Bai; the last two lines first use "A Thousand Feet Deep" to praise Peach Blossom Pond. The deepness of the water, followed by the word "less than", turns the pen and uses foil to turn the invisible friendship into the tangible thousand-foot pool of water, vividly expressing Wang Lun's sincere and deep friendship for Li Bai. The language of the whole poem is fresh and natural, and the imagination is rich and unique. Although it has only four sentences and twenty-eight characters, it is one of the most widely circulated masterpieces among Li Bai's poems.
