Du Fu’s ambition

When Du Fu was in his twenties, he did a long-term roaming between Wuyue, Qi and Zhao. In his own words, he was "debauched between Qi and Zhao, and his horses were quite wild."

During his wandering, he wrote a famous poem called "Looking at the Mountains"——

This poem can be said to be the most famous poem about Mount Tai throughout the ages. One song. Mount Tai, also known as "Dai", is the first of the five mountains, so it is also called Daizong.

This poem is called "Wang Yue". The first three sentences describe the scenery seen: How about Mount Tai? The mountain scenery spreads across the Qilu land, seemingly endless. The Creator gave it a majestic and beautiful scenery. The mountains in the south and the north are divided into yin and yang, and the light and darkness are completely different. Layers of clouds wash away my mind, and when I watch the returning birds entering the mountains, my eyes feel like they are about to burst.

The last sentence is that you must climb to the top of Mount Tai and overlook the tiny mountains. This poem is based on a sentence from "Mencius": "Confucius climbed to the east mountain and made Lu small, and climbed Mount Tai to make the world small."

I learned this poem in junior high school. I remember when I first entered high school, our class teacher specially asked other teachers to write the artistic calligraphy of the last sentence on the blackboard at the back of the classroom to encourage us.

"When you reach the top of the mountain, you can see all the small mountains at a glance", which is similar to Wang Zhihuan's "Want to see a thousand miles away and reach a higher level" and Wang Anshi's "Don't be afraid of the floating clouds covering your eyes, because you are at the highest level" "Layer" etc. have different approaches but the same purpose. However, Wang Zhihuan's tone was calm and he was more inclined to explain the truth; Wang Anshi had already reached the top and expressed his feelings. Only Du Fu's sentence is full of yearning for success and expresses his ambition to look down on others.

What is Du Fu’s ambition? He has always wanted to become the Prime Minister of the State Council and govern the country well. In his own words, he "dedicated himself to the emperors Yao and Shun, and then made the customs pure" and "stealed Ji and Qi" (Ji and Qi were famous ministers during the Yao and Shun period).

So has he realized his ideal? The answer is no. At most, he has been a minor official such as Zuo Shiyi, Huazhou Sigong and the Army, and a member of the Ministry of Inspection and Industry. He is still far from the "Ling Jueding". Not only did he fail to realize his ideal of governing the country, he also lived in poverty. One of his sons starved to death before he was one year old. In his collection of poems, you can often see "In the past, he was like a fish, now he is like a bereaved dog." In the end, he died in a boat on the Xiangjiang River, and his family could not even bury him...

But in the country of poetry, he really achieved "seeing everyone at a glance" The mountain is small”. He left more than 1,400 poems. In the words of the famous modern poet Mr. Feng Zhi, these poems are "like a dazzling, magnificent and colorful building", which meticulously reflects the history of the Tang Dynasty from prosperity to decline, and is known as " History of Poetry”. Yuan Zhen, a famous poet in the mid-Tang Dynasty, commented on Du Fu: "Since the beginning of the poet, there has never been anyone as beautiful as Zi." Mr. Guo Moruo, another famous poet in modern times, commented on Du Fu: "The world is devastated, but the sages in the poems, the suffering of the people, the waves in the writings."

It is the national backbone like Du Fu who shines brightly and illuminates five thousand years of Chinese history.
