The Yi calendar year is a traditional festival for the Yi people. It is called "Kushi" in Yi language. It is held in the 10th month of the lunar calendar and the 11th month of the Gregorian calendar. In villages where the Yi people live together, they choose auspicious days to celebrate the Yi year starting from October 16th of the lunar calendar and ending on the 30th. Due to the differences in auspicious dates in various places, some are in the early ten days of the month, some are in the middle days, and some are in the last ten days of the Gregorian calendar. Each village celebrates three days in the Yi calendar year. Therefore, it has the interpretation of one month in the Yi calendar year.

The Yi calendar year means celebrating the current year, offering sacrifices to ancestors, and praying for good weather, good harvests, prosperous livestock, and all the best in the coming year. Why celebrate the New Year in the tenth month of the lunar calendar? According to legend, there are two reasons. One is that in the history of the Yi people, ten months are counted as one year.

According to this calendar, October is the end of the year and the beginning of the new year, so it is also customarily called the "October Year". The second reason is that at this time, the crops in the Yi area have been harvested, the harvest is abundant, and farming is idle, so it is the right time to celebrate the New Year.
