High school translation of three poems by Du Fu

1. Spring Hope

Tang Dynasty: Du Fu

The country is broken by mountains and rivers, and the city has deep spring vegetation.

I am moved to tears by the flowers, and the birds are frightened by the hatred.

The war rages on for three months, and a letter from home is worth ten thousand gold.

The white-headed scratches are shorter, and the lust is overwhelming.

Translation

Chang'an fell, the country was broken, and only the mountains and rivers remained; spring came, and the sparsely populated Chang'an city was lush with vegetation. Feeling sentimental about state affairs, I can't help but burst into tears, and the chirping of birds frightens my heart, which only adds to the sadness and hatred of separation. The continuous war has lasted for more than half a year. Letters from home are rare, and one letter is worth ten thousand taels of gold. Wrapped in sadness, I scratched my head and thought. My white hair became shorter and shorter, and I almost couldn't insert a hairpin.

2. Climbing high

Tang Dynasty: Du Fu

The wind is strong, the sky is high, the ape is screaming in mourning, and the white bird is flying back from the clear sand in Zhugong.

Boundless falling trees rustle, and the endless Yangtze River rolls by.

Wanli is always a guest in the sad autumn, and he has been sick for hundreds of years and only appears on the stage.

Hard and bitter, I hate the frost on my temples, and my new wine glass becomes turbid.

Translation

The wind is strong, the sky is high, and the cries of apes are very sad. There are birds circling on the riverbank with clear water and white sand. The endless trees are rustling with fallen leaves, and the endless Yangtze River is rolling in. I feel sad about the autumn scenery, wandering thousands of miles and being a guest all year round. I have been plagued by illnesses throughout my life and now I am alone on the high platform. After going through hardships and bitterness, my hair has grown white on my temples, and my heart is full of decadence and I have stopped drinking wine to drink my sorrow.

3. Prime Minister of Shu

Tang Dynasty: Du Fu

Where can I find the ancestral hall of the Prime Minister? There are many cypresses outside Jinguan City.

The green grass reflects the spring color on the steps, and the oriole sounds good in the sky through the leaves.

Three visits to trouble the world, two dynasties to open the hearts of old ministers.

He died before leaving the army, which made the hero burst into tears.

Translation

Where can I find the ancestral hall of Wuhou Zhuge Liang? In the place with dense cypress trees outside Chengdu. The green grass reflects the spring color on the steps, and the orioles on the trees sing gracefully to each other in the air. The First Lord of Determining the World visited the thatched cottage three times and assisted in the founding of the two dynasties and was full of loyalty. It is a pity that he died of illness in the army but failed to conquer Wei Dynasty. This has often made heroes of all ages burst into tears!

4. The Year of Li Gui in the South of the Yangtze River

Tang Dynasty: Du Fu

It is common in Prince Qi’s house, and I heard it several times in front of Cui Jiutang. ?

It is the beautiful scenery in the south of the Yangtze River, and we meet you again when the flowers are falling.

Translation

In those days, I often saw your performances in King Qi’s residence; I also appreciated your art many times in front of Cui Jiutang. I never thought that in this beautiful Jiangnan, during the season of falling flowers, I would meet an old acquaintance like you by chance.

5. Climbing the Yueyang Tower

Tang Dynasty: Du Fu

In the past, I heard about the water in Dongting, and now I went to the Yueyang Tower.

In the southeast corner of Wu and Chu, the universe floats day and night.

There are no relatives and friends, and there are no old and sick people.

The soldiers and horses pass through the north of the mountain, and Pingxuan Tisi flows.

Translation

In the past days, I heard that Dongting Lake was magnificent, and today I finally climbed up to the Yueyang Tower. The vast lake tore apart Wu and Chu, as if the sun, moon and stars were floating in the water. There is no news from my relatives and friends, I am old and sick, and I am drifting around in a lonely boat. The fighting at the northern border broke out again, and I leaned on the railing and looked into the distance with tears streaming down my face.
