Text of Lesson 19 (Touch of Life) in Volume 1 of Chinese Language for Grade 5 in Primary Schools

The Touch of Life

On my birthday, my mother solemnly took out a few things to show me. What is that? It's something I used when I was a kid. Oh, I'm so embarrassed. Put it away.

A pair of small shoes crocheted with wool, a pink bib, a big-eyed doll, and a photo album from when I was born to when I was in kindergarten .

Mom said: "I have been keeping these things, just because I want to show you when you grow up. Now that you are 15 years old, you are not young anymore. These items that record your growth may make you feel your growth. My joy and love for life.”

Dad was laughing as he seemed to be immersed in the innocent and cute fun of my childhood. He closed his eyes and recalled: "That day, I sent your mother into the delivery room and waited anxiously outside. When I saw you for the first time, I was so happy that I can't tell you. You were lying quietly on the little bed, like You are as gentle as the dew on the grass blades, and your face is as red as rose petals. You are a treasure of love and beauty, which makes us extremely happy. It is so good to have a daughter!" "In the cold winter, all the diapers you use are put away first. I only gave it to you when it was warm in my arms." Dad added.

My heart felt warm after hearing this, and my father’s love made my heart beat even more. I looked closely at the tiny shoes and couldn't believe how small my feet had once been. Opening the photo album, wow, I was just like this when I was just born. I didn’t understand anything except stuffing my hands into my mouth. Cry sometimes, laugh sometimes. Is that me? Incredible.

Dad and mom are really capable. It’s not easy to raise such a tiny little thing into the person I am now.

When I was young, I was petite and frail. I heard from my grandma that I often had to go to the hospital for medicine and injections, and I often had accidents.

Once the nanny accidentally placed a hot water bottle next to a small table where I was playing. I knocked it over with my foot, and the boiling water burned my feet as hot as two carrots. Fortunately, my mother arrived in time and took me to the hospital. Otherwise, I would have become a disabled person. I still have faint scars on my feet.

Another time, I fell from a wooden horse and suffered a concussion. My mother cried every day and stayed with me in the hospital for a long period of treatment. When I was growing up, my mother concentrated all the beautiful things in the world on me. She sang to me and read poems and fairy tales to me. Music and poetry were integrated into my young mind.

Looking at the items used by children in front of me, my eyes were a little moist. Every day of my life of more than ten years, I have always been surrounded by love. No matter what form I use to repay my parents, it is just a drop of water to a long river, and that touch will accompany me throughout my life.

I will respect all lives born of love!
