This is a dialogue between monk Shen Xiu and Huineng.
Shen Xiu (606? -706), the common surname Li, was born in Bianzhou Weishi (now Henan Weishi). Becoming a monk at the end of Sui Dynasty. Tang Gaozu was ordained in Luoyang during the Wude period. At the age of 50, he inherited Hongren, the fifth ancestor of Zen Buddhism. Six years later, he was promoted to a monk. After Hong Ren's death, he moved to Gangneung to be yuquan temple of Yangshan Mountain, and started the Northern Sect of Zen. He became a monk in Datong.
Body is the foundation of enlightenment (Bodhi means enlightenment, Sakyamuni used to realize Buddha under Bibolo tree, and later generations called this tree Bodhi tree), and the heart is like a mirror, which can reflect everything. When the image comes, the mirror does not increase, and when the image goes, the mirror does not decrease. The "body" and "heart" here are actually intertextual and have the same meaning, but they are arranged in line with the syntax of poetry.
The word "Bodhi" is a transliteration of Bodhi in ancient Indian (Sanskrit), which means consciousness and wisdom. Used to refer to people who suddenly wake up, suddenly realize, suddenly break into the road of enlightenment, suddenly realize the truth and reach the realm of transcendence. In English, the word "Bodhi Tree" is peepul, Bo-Tree or Large-Tree, all of which mean magnanimity, compassion, distinguishing good from evil and awakening truth. In plant taxonomy, the Latin name of Bodhi Tree is Ficus religosa, which means sacred religion.
Huineng said: Bodhi has no trees, and the mirror is not a stage. There is nothing, so there is no dust.
