What does it mean that the pen falls and the wind and rain startles, and the poem makes the gods cry?

It means: seeing him put pen to paper, the wind and rain lamented it; Seeing his poems, ghosts and gods were moved to tears.

It's from Du Fu's "Send Li Twelve White and Twenty Rhymes" in the Tang Dynasty. The original excerpt:

In the past years, there was a fanatic, whose name was Elbow Immortal. The pen falls and shocks the wind and rain, and the poem becomes a cry.

Translation:

At that time, there was a free and unrestrained person named Li Bai, who was also known as Xianxian. Seeing him put pen to paper, the wind and rain lamented it; Seeing his poems, ghosts and gods were moved to tears.

From then on, Li Bai's name shook the capital, and his previous difficulties and frustrations were swept away, and he was called into the imperial court by Xuanzong as an academician. His earth-shattering, weeping poems will be passed down from generation to generation.

He went boating with Xuanzong until very late, and was finally given a robe by the emperor. Xuanzong often summoned Li Bai, who was very popular.

Extended information

Creation background:

Du Fu and Li Bai are very close friends. After hearing the news that Li Bai was exiled by the imperial court, he was very sorry, so he wrote some poems that missed and praised Li Bai, and "Send Li Twelve White Rhymes" was one of them.

Appreciation of works:

From "there were fanatics in the past years" to "following the footsteps of Qingyun", this paper traces Li Bai's experience of entering Chang 'an twice in the 18th year of Kaiyuan (73) and the first year of Tianbao (742), giving a high summary of Li Bai's first half life, and at the same time, warmly praising the artistic achievements of Li Bai's poems.

The two sentences, "When a pen falls, it will shock the wind and rain, and poetry will make you cry", have always been regarded as excellent sentences describing Li Bai. The poet praised the powerful artistic charm of Li Bai's poems with highly exaggerated techniques. Putting pen to paper can disturb the storm, which shows that Li Bai's poems and songs are magnificent; Poetry can make ghosts and gods cry, which shows that Li Bai's poems and songs are touching.

The poet praised Li Bai's outstanding talent with exquisite language, and Li Bai, the "Poet Fairy", is indeed qualified to accept this praise. From this, we can see Du Fu's admiration and respect for Li Bai.

Later, Li Bai was often called into the palace to draft proclamations and music for the emperor. Because he was favored, some scribes followed him. At this time, Li Bai was full of ambition and reached its peak, and the poet did not hesitate to highlight it. Through the description of Li Bai's two visits to Chang 'an, the poet outlined a charming, elegant and unrestrained poet image with extremely refined brushwork.

About the author:

Du Fu (712 -77), with beautiful words, was a realistic poet in the Tang Dynasty, and was called "Li Du" together with Li Bai. In order to distinguish Li Shangyin and Du Mu from "Little Li Du", Du Fu and Li Bai are also called "Great Li Du", and Du Fu is often called "Old Du".

His poems are mostly about social unrest, political darkness, and people's sufferings, recording the historical changes from prosperity to decline in the Tang Dynasty, and expressing the lofty Confucian benevolence spirit and strong sense of hardship, so they are known as "the history of poetry".
