Appreciation of Du Mu's Poems
The Wild Goose is a work with borrowed meaning. The late Tang society in which Du Mu lived was the eventful autumn of the Tang Empire. In August of the second year of Wuzong Huichang (842), the Uighur slave-owner aristocratic military group living in Saibei, taking advantage of the corruption of the Tang Dynasty, harassed and massacred the people in the border areas, leaving them homeless. When the poet saw the wild geese migrating south, he was excited by the scenery and expressed his deep sympathy and concern for the people in distress.
