Impression and understanding of western poetry

The earliest poetry in Europe is epic. Epic, as a narrative poem, itself is the product of myth artistry. Marx once said that ancient Greek mythology is the cradle of Homer's epic. On the one hand, Homer's epic is based on the expedition to Asia Minor on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea in ancient Greek history, and on the other hand, it incorporates a lot of mythological factors, showing people's heroism in the war and people's great vitality in facing nature. From Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, to the Roman poet Virgil's Enid, to the heroic epic in the Middle Ages, from the hero of God to the hero of man, heroes with strength, courage, tenacity and wisdom have become the objects of national worship, thus showing the ideal of life of western nations. In addition, it also influenced the creation of long narrative poems in European countries. Dante's Divine Comedy, Milton's Paradise Lost, paradise regained, Samson, and Goethe's Faust all developed from heroic epics expressing great external conflicts to character epics revealing inner conflicts.
