During Zhenyuan period of Tang Dynasty, Jinshi Zhang Xun spent the night in Shanxi Pujiu Temple, and met Fu Yun's daughter Cui, who had stayed in the west wing of the temple when she returned to China. They were attracted by each other's poems.
Once, a robber envied the temple and tried to rob Cui Yingying. Yingying's mother, the old lady, claimed that she could save her daughter and betrothed her to him. Zhang Sheng wrote a letter asking for help from one of his old "White Horse Generals", Du Taishou of Zhou Pu. He was surrounded by a monk and sent out. Du Taishou sent his troops to rescue him.
Later, the old lady broke off her marriage because of her unhealthy family background, and only asked Yingying to take Zhang Sheng as her adopted brother to thank her for saving her life.
Zhang sheng can't get sick. With the help of Yingying's maid matchmaker, the two secretly wrote letters. Finally, they had an affair and the old lady found out. Because the matchmaker struggled, in desperation, the old lady ordered Zhang Sheng to go to Beijing to catch the exam. Zhang Sheng passed the exam and came back to marry Yingying.
