Huang tingjian's poems take Du Fu, the master of Tang poetry, as the study object, and construct and put forward poetic theories such as "turning iron into gold" and "taking the fetus for bones", which became the theoretical program and creative principle of Jiangxi poetry school and had a far-reaching influence on later literary creation.
As far as the subject matter scope is concerned, Huang Tingjian's poems have no obvious characteristics. About two-thirds of the more than 1,9 poems handed down by him are poems about caring for relatives and friends, expressing feelings at times, describing landscapes and chanting calligraphy and painting, which are basically the same as those of Wang Anshi and Su Shi.
Huang's poems are characterized by strong literary popularity and bookish spirit, and the humanistic images in the poems are particularly dense. First of all, Huang Tingjian likes to chant calligraphy and painting works, pavilions, pens, ink, paper, inkstones, incense, fans and other objects. These objects themselves are the products of cultural activities or objects closely related to literati's life, which will naturally make poetry full of literati color.
