Back to Yan 'an is a new poem written in the form of Pilgrim's Progress, a folk song in northern Shaanxi. The poet recalled the fighting life in Yan 'an with full passion, praised the great changes in Yan 'an, looked forward to the future of Yan 'an, showed the author's childlike innocence of missing his mother Yan 'an and expressed his attachment to her mother Yan 'an.
Xintianyou is a folk song widely circulated in northern Shaanxi, also known as "Shuntian Tour". "Bi" or "Xing" techniques are often used. The so-called "comparison" means that the first sentence begins with a metaphor, and then the second sentence tells the meaning related to "comparison". The so-called "prosperity" is to use things to prosper, which leads to the original intention of the second sentence.

The tune is simple, high-pitched, long and rhythmic. Lyrics generally consist of two sentences, the previous one is often a metaphor, and the next one tells the truth. Each sentence has four beats (sometimes with a sandwich), similar to a seven-character poem. The short one is only one or two knots, and the long one can reach dozens of knots. The upper and lower sentences of each section rhyme, and many sections can rhyme together or change. Sing the same tune over and over again in many stanzas (sometimes with slight variations).
