Many children grew up in stories during their childhood. When we were children, we loved listening to stories. When we grew up, we often told stories to our children. The magical and interesting plots in the story often keep children entertained. It can be said that "stories are an indispensable part of children's growth process. They have a huge role in developing children's language and enriching children's emotions and imagination." When teaching English classic fairy tales, we found that learning English Fairy tales can not only increase children's knowledge, expand children's vocabulary, and improve children's reading level, but also allow children to use English in the process of performing fairy tales and experience the infinite charm of English. It also allows children to learn English. While learning how to deal with others. Let’s talk about the role of English classic fairy tales in primary school English teaching from three aspects.
1. Acting out stories and increasing interest
"Interest is the best teacher." In the teaching of English classic fairy tales, we specially selected them according to the characteristics of students' physical and mental development. Classic fairy tales in English that are in line with students' psychological characteristics. In the middle and lower grades, we will choose fairy tales related to animals, such as: "The Wolf Is Coming", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Three Little Pigs", etc.; while in the middle and upper grades, the choice of stories will be wider, The content will be richer. Before teaching stories, we will adapt the stories to reduce the language difficulty according to the students' English knowledge level, but do not change the moral of the stories.
For example, when teaching the story "Little Red Riding Hood" in the third grade, because the third-year students have just started to come into contact with English, they know very little English vocabulary. In order to reduce the difficulty of reading and improve their interest in learning, the author based on Students' prior knowledge is used to adapt fairy tales into scripts with simple language. In teaching, the author uses the teacher's interpretation of the story to present the script according to the characteristics of the students. The simple language, magical fairy tale colors, and the author's passionate performance firmly caught the students' attention, greatly improved their interest in learning, and enhanced their desire to participate in the story performance. When playing out stories, every child was very excited. Even classmates who usually don't like to talk were happy to play the role of birds and rabbits... Every child enjoyed the fun of English from learning the stories, and in the performance of the stories Experience the joy of success.
2. Learn stories and learn words
The story itself is a situation, and the plot in the story can help students understand the meaning of words and improve the efficiency of learning words. When teaching English fairy tales, we extract some common words in the stories, let students guess the meaning of the words based on pictures or the teacher's movements, expressions and other prompts, and consolidate learning through interesting games. For example, in the case of "Little Red Riding Hood", the author extracted commonly used words in the article such as bird, rabbit, wolf, hunter, and forest, and asked students to conduct word and picture matching activities to help students clarify the meaning of the words. In the fairy tale teaching of "Three Little Pigs", the author asked students to infer the meaning of new words such as straw, stick, brick, house and so on based on the pictures and story context. In the story teaching of "Snow White and the Seven Little Men", the author guides students to guess the meanings of new words such as queen, mirror, magic, poisoned and so on through the context.
When teaching the "PEP Primary School English" textbook, we were pleasantly surprised to find that because students had already been exposed to many words when learning fairy tales, when they learned these words again, the learning difficulty was reduced, and the students' The enthusiasm for learning becomes even higher, and people become more confident.
3. Learn stories and understand the truth
Fairy tales, especially fables, usually contain a truth. Using classic English fairy tales to infiltrate emotional education into students and let them learn how to behave is an important part of our project. When teaching English classic fairy tales, we mainly choose fables, especially the famous ones in "Aesop's Fables" and "Grimm's Fairy Tales". We will adapt these stories to suit students' English proficiency and reduce learning difficulty, but we will definitely keep the morals unchanged. In this way, students can not only learn English knowledge through English stories, but also gain the principles of life.
For example, after studying "Little Riding Hood", the author asked the students: "What do you learn from the story? (What did you learn from the story?)" Some students said: "Don't talk casually to strangers People talk. (Little Red Riding Hood talks to the Big Bad Wolf)" Some students said: "Be a polite child like Little Red Riding Hood" and so on. Another example is "The Lion and the Mouse" which tells us "Don't look down on the weak", "Everyone has their own strengths", "We must help each other".
After learning the principles in the story, we often use fables to educate students in daily education. When students make mistakes, we don't need to give a long explanation. We just need to simply tell the name of the story so that students can understand their mistakes. The combination of learning knowledge and moral education really kills two birds with one stone.
