The core of Confucius' ethical thought is "benevolence", and the objective standard of "benevolence" is courtesy. The so-called "self-denial and courtesy" requires people to consciously restrain themselves and correctly handle the relationship between the upper and lower in a given position according to the standard of courtesy, such as kindness to the father, filial piety to the son, trust to the friend, loyalty to the minister, kindness to the monarch and love for the people. It can be seen that the improvement of the moral realm of individual members of society and the stability and promotion of the political order of the whole social civilization are a harmonious and unified process. Rites require every member of society to abide by the established social relations, and also give them certain moral responsibilities. If people abide by these relationships and fulfill their moral responsibilities, society will be stable, otherwise, if order is destroyed, society will be turbulent. The detailed meaning of "self-denial, courtesy and benevolence" also includes regulating everyone's words and deeds. In this respect, politeness is not only a standardized and civilized way, but also a lot of specific rituals based on traditional customs. Confucius believes that the study and practice of etiquette is the minimum condition for a person to settle down in society.
