1. Passing by my old friend’s village

Tang Dynasty: Meng Haoran

My old friend brought chicken and millet and invited me to Tian’s house.

The green trees are adjacent to the village, and the green mountains and hills are sloping outside.

Open a dining room and chat over wine.

On the Double Ninth Festival, I will come to see chrysanthemums.

Translation

An old friend prepared a sumptuous meal and invited me to his hospitable farmhouse.

Green woods surround the village, and green mountains lie outside the city.

Open the window and face the vegetable garden of the threshing floor, holding a wine glass in hand and chatting about the crops.

When the Double Ninth Festival comes, please come here to enjoy the chrysanthemums.

2. Moonlight Night

Tang Dynasty: Liu Fangping

The moonlight is deeper than half of the house, and the North Dipper is slanted towards the south. ?

Tonight I know that the spring air is warm, and the sound of insects is new through the green window screen.

Translation

The night was quieter and the moonlight only illuminated half of the house, while the other half was hidden in the darkness. The Big Dipper is tilted, and the South Dipper is also tilted.

Tonight you know that spring is coming, because you hear the chirping of insects outside the window screen that is reflected in the green leaves, and for the first time it comes to the house.

3. Returning to the garden and living in the fields·Part 3

Wei and Jin Dynasties: Tao Yuanming

Bean planting at the foot of the southern mountain, the grass is full of bean seedlings.

In the morning, I clean up the wasteland and filth, and return with a hoe in the moonlight.

The road is narrow, the grass and trees are long, and the evening dew touches my clothes.

I don’t regret the stain on my clothes, but my wishes are fulfilled.

Translation

I plant beans at the foot of Nanshan Mountain. The weeds are lush and the bean seedlings are sparse.

Get up early in the morning and go to the fields to weed weeds, and return home with a hoe under the moonlight at nightfall.

The narrow mountain path was overgrown with vegetation, and my clothes were wet with night dew.

It’s not a pity if your clothes get wet. I just hope it doesn’t go against my intention to return to farming.

4. Langtaosha·Nine bends of the Yellow River, thousands of miles of sand

Tang Dynasty: Liu Yuxi

Nine bends of the Yellow River, thousands of miles of sand, are blown by the wind from the end of the world.

Now we go straight up the Milky Way, to the home of the Morning Glory and the Weaver Girl.

Translation

The Jiuqu Yellow River meanders from a distant place, carrying thousands of miles of yellow sand along the way.

Since you came from the horizon, you seem to be flying straight up to the Milky Way high in the sky. Please take me up to the Milky Way, and visit the homes of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl together.

5. Pastoral Miscellany in Four Seasons·Part 2

Song Dynasty: Fan Chengda

The plums are golden and the apricots are fat, and the wheat flowers, snow and white cauliflower are sparse.

No one passes by the fence as the day progresses, only dragonflies and butterflies fly. (Wei Tong Wei)

Translation

The plums on the trees turned golden, and the apricots grew bigger and bigger; the buckwheat flowers were all white, and the rapeseed flowers looked sparse.

As the day gets longer, the shadow of the fence becomes shorter and shorter as the sun rises. No one passes by; only dragonflies and butterflies fly around the fence.
