You asked me when I would go home, but I haven't set a date yet. It rains heavily in Bashan tonight, and it rains in autumn pool. When will you and I get together again and cut the candle flowers in the west window? Tonight I will tell you about the autumn rain, my painful feelings!

This is the author's reply to Chang 'an's wife (a friend) in the form of a poem when living in a foreign land. The first two sentences of this poem, by asking questions and describing the immediate environment, illustrate the loneliness and deep yearning for each other; The last two sentences imagine the joy of meeting again tomorrow and laughing, reflecting the loneliness tonight. This poem was written by Li Shangyin when he was stranded in Bashu. Judging from the content and emotion of poetry, people who are close to the author are remembered. Because Chang 'an is in the north of Bashu, it is entitled "A note to friends in the north on a rainy night".
In Ten Thousand Tang Poems compiled by Hong Mai in the Southern Song Dynasty, the title of this poem is Rain at Night, which means that this poem is for his wife Wang. Li Shangyin went to Dongchuan for me in July of the fifth year of Dazhong (85 1), and Wang died at the turn of summer and autumn this year. It was several months before Li Shangyin learned of his wife's death.
The note to friends in the north on a rainy night is the title of Shi Li's poems. "North" refers to people in the north, either wives or friends. After textual research, some people think that it was written after the death of the author's wife, Wang, so it is not a poem, but a gift to friends in Chang 'an. But judging from the content of the poem, it seems more accurate to interpret it with "inward delivery".
