The emotional expression in Petrarch's poems ranges from ecstasy to extreme despair. However, because his poems are not arranged in chronological order, scholars have been racking their brains for the order for the past few hundred years. Frederic J. Jones, an Italian researcher at the University of Wales, speculated that Petrarch's feelings might follow some kind of periodic cycle. From those poems with known writing dates, he quantified emotions, ranking them from crazy love (+1) to abyss despair (-1), and interspersed with the assignments from 1 to-1: general passion, quiet love, simple friendship, mild depression and anguish. Jones found that Petrarch experienced six ups and downs in 2 1 year, so he determined the ages of all poems with unknown writing dates and arranged them in order.
