The Ancient Poems of Du Mu in Chibi in Tang Dynasty

Chibi is a seven-character quatrain written by Du Mu, a poet in the Tang Dynasty.

Original text:

A broken iron halberd sank into the sand and disappeared, only to find that it was the remnant of Battle of Red Cliffs after grinding and washing.

If the east wind is not convenient for Zhou Yu, I'm afraid the outcome will be Cao Cao's victory and Er Qiao's detention in Tongquetai.

Translation:

A broken halberd sank into the underwater sand and was not eroded. After polishing and cleaning, it was found to be a relic of Battle of Red Cliffs.

If the east wind is not convenient for Zhou Yu, I am afraid that Cao Cao will win and Er Qiao will be put in Tongquetai.

Creative background and appreciation:

This poem was written by Du Mu after passing through the ancient battlefield of Chibi (now Chiji Mountain in the southwest of Wuchang County, Hubei Province) and feeling the success or failure of heroes in the Three Kingdoms period.

At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, in the 13th year of Jian 'an (2008), the allied forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeated Cao Cao's army in Chibi (now northwest of chibi city, Hubei Province) near the Yangtze River. This is one of the famous battles in the history of China, in which the few win the many and the weak win the strong.

Battle of Red Cliffs's failure made Cao Cao lose the possibility of unifying the whole country in a short time, while Sun and Liu started the development of their respective forces through Battle of Red Cliffs's victory. After Liu Bei borrowed Jingzhou from Sun Quan, his strength grew rapidly and he made a profit. Sun Quan led the army to attack Hefei many times, which was unfavorable in several wars.
