This poem has been waiting for many years. If it premiered at 1937, it would have been at least 657 years. This is a collection of poems-a manuscript of a monastery. The concept of this "manuscript" is somewhat similar to the manuscript of A Dream of Red Mansions-according to the text of the Oxford Music Dictionary, it is "a student song whose nature is addicted to drinking, women and love." These poems are obviously written by clergy, down-and-out literati and vagrants, and their bohemian spirit, praise of decadent lifestyle and ruthless ridicule of feudal society are surprising. It is a miracle that this kind of erotic poems appeared in the Middle Ages centered on Christian culture, and it is even more shocking that the unknown authors of these poems are monks and other church figures. So it was later called "medieval Latin lyric poetry". Of course, drinking, women and love written in this collection of poems are drinking, women and love 600 years ago. Very essential, almost not the kind of drinking and women that modern people feel, not so unbearable.
This collection of poems has been hidden for six centuries, waiting for six centuries in a rough cloth bag, under a damp mattress, or in a dusty teaching document. It was not until carl orff sat down that he knew that a pair of wings of music would take him to the secular world.
Such a musician, when he first read this collection of poems, was immediately shocked and attracted by its touching power, especially the song "Wheel of Destiny" at the beginning gave him great enthusiasm, which made him immediately have the idea of creating a musical work with these poems. Orff labeled this work as "secular songs accompanied by soloists, choirs and instrumental Muqiao for magical scenery", and called it "Cantata", demanding that it be performed in the form of stage works. Its huge establishment includes soprano, tenor and baritone solos, chorus with chorus and children's chorus, and large orchestra with two pianos and various percussion instruments. In actual performances, it is often accompanied by scenes of scenery and clown dancing.
In Song of the Bran, Orff shows highly personalized creative characteristics and unique writing methods. He used very simple techniques, only simple melody and powerful rhythm throughout, and abandoned complex ways such as counterpoint and music theme development. We can't say that Orff accurately reproduced what happened in the13rd century, and there was no time channel to take it all back. But an ancient poem has indeed been reborn in Orff's music, which is based on the imagination and creativity of musicians. Where there is imagination, there is the past.
