Appreciation of Dream Songs' Poetry

As a group of poems, the arrangement of Dream Song lacks the continuity of plot and theme, and all poems are connected in series with characters as the main line. This character image is Henry Busquet. According to Barjman's own statement, Henry is an imaginary figure, and he often changes, sometimes he is a failed middle-aged African-American image, and sometimes he speaks in the first person, the second person and the third person. He has a friend, Burns, whose name is constantly changing. Dream Song is full of comic uncertainty, so it is difficult for readers to distinguish the poet himself, Henry and Mr. Burns. As the main character, Henry is indecisive and self-pitying, and his life is full of strange colors, but this is not the reason why he is often frustrated. Henry's mental illness cannot overcome himself.

if the theme of "life and friends are boring" in the title is just a hypothesis, then the following repeated emphasis makes the hypothesis become the subconscious of the narrative hero alone: "My mother told me when I was a child/(repeatedly)' Admitting that you are bored/means that you lack/spiritual education. I now come to the conclusion that I have no spiritual education because I am bored to death. Boredom is not only the hero's emotional experience and attitude towards life, but also the emotional tone of the whole poem. He seems to be an obsessive-compulsive disorder, although he says we must never say that. /After all, the sky is shining, the sea is full of longing/we ourselves are full of light and longing. "However, this kind of claim is insincere and can only increase the despair of the protagonist. "Full of light and longing" is the expectation of secular eyes for the protagonist, and it is also the standard for evaluating success or failure. The protagonist is extremely disgusted with this secular view. When the hero admitted to his mother that he was "lacking in spiritual education", he completely broke with the moral standards that the society depended on. He had torn the last veil of self-deception and moral education, and faced the fact frankly and almost desperately-"making friends is boring".

The hero seems to be a fighter who declares war on tradition. He no longer endures the imprisonment of the outside world, but declares war on everything now and everything he was taught to love or respect. "Boring" embodies the poet's outlook on life: life itself and even the world itself are boring. Life itself includes the social people connected with it, including the forms of life, especially literature and art. Here, the poet emphasized "great literary works" for a reason. On the one hand, Freud called literature "Libido". According to this theory, the hero hates literature, that is, he is tired of all things and forms, including primitive desires; On the other hand, "great literary works" seems to refer to all literary forms that they think bear spiritual significance, from which it can be seen that Barjman also holds a negative attitude towards the previous literary thoughts. Finally, he declared war on nature and introduced his despair into the last haven of mankind. "The quiet mountains and fishing nets look/look more like a sled". He even doubted himself, "leaving me behind as a clown".

We can see from the poet's deep boredom and intense feeling of world-weariness, so it is not surprising that he ended his life by jumping into the river. Finally, let's take a look at Daniel Hoffman's comment: "Barjman's songs and dreams are all derived from his injured self. ..... Barjman took despair as the burden of his art, faced it and struggled with it. Following the great romantic tradition, the poet is at the center of poetry: replacing social activists like heroes, and as an emotional person, the poet tells us how to live in this world. The poet's sadness and pain are not only personal disasters, they illustrate the emotional climate of our times. "
