Su Shi's Translation of Ancient Poems of Begonia

Begonia, this quatrain was written in the third year of Yuanfeng (AD 1080), and Su Shi was demoted to Huangzhou (now Huanggang, Hubei). The first two sentences are about the environment, and the last two sentences are about loving flowers. The title is Haitang, but the pen does not describe Haitang. This is a curved pen. The following is the translation of Su Shi's ancient poem Haitang. Welcome to read!

Dongfeng is full of worship,

The fragrance and fog are empty, and the moon turns to the corridor.

I'm afraid the flowers will fall asleep at night,

So, light up the candles and brighten the red makeup.

Explanation of words:

Haitang: In the past, the Ming emperor invited the imperial concubine to have a banquet with him, and the imperial concubine woke up after drinking. The emperor said, "Haitang didn't sleep enough." This poem is a play.

Curly wind: the way the breeze blows gently;

Pan: shake;

Sogou: refers to the noble and gorgeous luster;

Therefore: so;

Red makeup: Bimei Haitang;

Sleeping in the middle of the night: secretly quoting Tang Xuanzong's allusion that Yang Guifei "Haitang didn't sleep enough";

Translation of works:

The east wind blows faint clouds, exposing the moon, and the moonlight is also faint. The fragrance of flowers melted in the hazy fog, and the moon had moved over the cloister in the courtyard. Because I am just afraid that Huaer will fall asleep in the middle of the night. Therefore, burning a tall candle, I refused to miss the opportunity to enjoy this blooming begonia.

Appreciation of works:

The first sentence of this poem is about begonia during the day, and "pan-worship" refers to the noble beauty of begonia. The second sentence is about night begonia, and the author creates a fragrant, ethereal and somewhat psychedelic realm. Slightly lonely, in line with Haitang's self-indulgence and loneliness. The last two sentences are allusions, and the author is afraid that flowers will fall asleep in the middle of the night. Not only compare flowers to people, but also compare people to flowers. I am very touched by the thought of flowers, which shows that the author is a person with temperament. On the one hand, the author should light a red candle to accompany and care for Haitang, on the other hand, he should create an atmosphere to cheer Haitang up and not fall asleep. The last two sentences are very romantic. Song Shi Hui Hong's "Cold Zhai Night Talk" thinks that this poem is a "word-making work" and a "change from ancient times to modern times".

"East Wind Curls" describes the blowing state of spring breeze, using the sentence "Autumn Wind Curls" in "Songs of the South". "sogou" refers to the growing spring. With the word "Pan", it vividly writes the warmth of spring and creates momentum for the blooming of Haitang.

The second sentence is about the silhouette of Haitang, and the fragrance of Haitang is scattered in the dense fog, which is refreshing. "the moon turns to the gallery", the moon turns to the gallery, but this begonia flower is invisible; It means that the night is deep and people can't sleep. Of course, you can also read a metaphor from it: you are far away from the rivers and lakes, which is not in line with the king's favor.

"I'm afraid of falling asleep at night" is the key sentence of the whole poem. This sentence is a turning point, writing the mentality of flower lovers. When Yuehua could no longer shine on the beauty of Haitang, the poet was suddenly filled with pity: Haitang is so beautiful, how can she bear to let her live alone in the dark? Isn't it sad and disappointing that no one appreciates the flowers that bloom silently in a season? It's quiet at night, and I'm full of loneliness, so I can't sleep naturally. Flowers are lonely and cold, and I want to sleep. How can I spend this long night alone? No, only I can listen to the sound of flowers; Only this lonely begonia can accompany me all night!

A "fear" writes out my worries and fears caused by unbearable loneliness, and also hides my persistence in spending the night with flowers.

The word "only" polarized the infatuation of the flower lover. Now all he can think of is the bright smile of the flower, and all the other unhappiness can be written off for the time being: this is a transcendental realm of "forgetting me" and "not having me".

The last sentence goes further, raising the love for flowers to the extreme. "So" refers to the word "for fear" mentioned above, which means deliberately doing it. It can be seen that the poet has a special liking for Haitang. Song Shi Hui-Hong's "Cold Zhai Night Talk" records: Emperor Tang Ming boarded the Champs Elysé es and summoned Taizhen's concubine. He was getting drunk and ordered Gao Lishi to help him. The concubines are drunk and have residual makeup, and their temples are messy, so they can't worship anymore. The Ming emperor laughed at the sun: "Is the concubine drunk?" I can't sleep until my ears are full! " "This sentence used the allusion of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, and Yang Guifei's drunken appearance was" Haitang didn't sleep enough ",and turned to flowers as a metaphor for people, punctuating and chanting without trace.

"Lighting a Candle" is a wonderful contrast with the "Moon Corridor" mentioned above. Moonlight seems to be too jealous of the brilliance of this blooming begonia, so mean and ungrateful, and refuses to show her a beautiful stage; Then let me drive away the darkness of this long night for her with a red candle with a high fever! The poet's chivalry and kindness are faintly visible here.

"Red Makeup" echoes the word "flowers go to sleep" in the previous sentence, which is extremely charming and moving. On the surface, the words "burn" and "photo" are written about my love and care for flowers, but in fact, they can't help but reveal some unhappiness in life. He wants to get rid of the pain in "playing with things" (enjoying flowers), even if it is only a moment of detachment. Although the flowers are in full bloom, they will take a step towards decline. Although the high-spirited flowers are far away from the soil of reality after all, he thought about this positive attitude of going his own way and enjoying it. Who can stop it?

The language of the whole poem is always simple and affectionate.

(1) What is the function of the scenery description in the first two sentences of the poem?

A: The scenery description in the first two sentences of this poem has two functions:

A, the author uses the method of combining front and side to contrast and render a vague realm and atmosphere. "The Wind" describes the dynamics of its breeze, and sogou is noble and beautiful; B, suggesting the author's loneliness.

(2) The ancients once rated the last two poems as "the strangeness of language creation and the ingenuity of conception". Please combine three or four poems to enjoy.

A: "I was afraid that the flowers would fall asleep in the middle of the night, so I lit a high candle to shine red makeup", which was praised as "the strangeness of language and the ingenuity of conception". In ancient times, "strangeness" often used people as metaphors for flowers, but the author used flowers as metaphors for people and felt the same. In the poet's imagination, begonia flowers, like people, will fall asleep at midnight. Therefore, it is idiotic to light a high candle to cheer up Haitang. At the same time, Li Shangyin's "When a guest wakes up in the middle of the night, he still holds a red candle to shine on the residual wine" ("Drunk under the Flowers") has no axe marks. So this quatrain has been passed down through the ages.
