Cheng is one of the main representative poets of the "Academic Poetry Movement" with great influence in 1980s. He began to write prose in the early 1990s, and now he has become a well-known prose writer in Chinese mainland and North America. He has been engaged in writing for more than 20 years, and has written poetry collections, such as rainy season is coming, the door is not open, Cheng Jueju, Shi Li, the rhyme of spring, English-Chinese comparative poetry collections, and the blade of paper. Cheng's Poetry and the Translation of Contemporary Poetry in China (in collaboration with Professor Richard Terrill) was published in Northwest Review, Tampa Review, New Orleans Review, Chicago Magazine, American and European North Dakota Quarterly, California Poetry Quarterly, Sino-American Review, Trafika and other English literary journals. His translation of contemporary American novels and essays has been published in Lotus and other publications.
