Guangweiran, formerly known as Zhang Guangnian, was born in Guanghua County, Hubei Province in 1913. He joined the revolutionary work in middle school in 1927, dropped out of school after the "April 12th" counter-revolutionary coup, and worked as an apprentice, a shop assistant and a primary school teacher. Arrived in Shanghai in 1936 to participate in the anti-Japanese national salvation movement and engage in progressive literary and artistic activities. In August, 1935, he wrote the lyrics of Flowers in May, which were widely sung because of their deep sorrow and resentment. After arriving in Yan 'an in 1939, The Yellow River Cantata, a group poem praising the spirit of the Chinese nation, was composed by Xian Xinghai and became popular all over the country. After the founding of New China, he served as the editor-in-chief of Script, Literary Newspaper and People's Literature.
