Send to Anxi

Gaoshi

The line is opposite to the cornice, and the golden whip refers to iron.

Wan Li fame, sorrow in a cup.

Yan Zhibei, Taibai East, Qin Cheng.

Don't be disappointed when you are away from the soul.

Gao Shi (702-765) was born in Bohai (now Jingxian County, Hebei Province). When I was a teenager, my family was poor and frustrated. Later, I wandered around Yan, Zhao, Liang and Song. He is also in charge of the curtain secretary of our envoy in Hexi, Ke Shuhan. He lived in the army for a long time, was familiar with the natural environment and military life in the frontier, and wrote many beautiful frontier poems, which reflected the situation in the frontier at that time and the pain of soldiers being conscripted, and showed great concern for frontline soldiers.

This is a farewell poem. "Shi Yu" is the abbreviation of history and the official name. Anxi, the capital of Anxi established in the Tang Dynasty, is located near Kuqa, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region today. The author wrote this poem to send his friend Li Shiyu to Anxi.

"Walk on the eaves and walk on the wall, and the golden whip refers to the shovel." It means that you, a person who is about to travel far away, are facing me, an elusive person (flying over the eaves and walking over the wall, the author refers to yourself), but I am seeing you off, and soon you will ride a war horse (iron horse) in real armor and go to the frontier. I stay here alone, like a canopy floating in the wind in autumn. When I bid farewell to my friends, my heart was already troubled by the feelings of parting and leaving. As a farewell, I am like grass in the wind, wandering around, and my whereabouts are uncertain, which adds to my infinite melancholy. Here, the author uses "flying canopy" to describe it, further exaggerating his feelings when he left.

The second couplet is a toast when writing a farewell dinner. "Beyond Wan Li's fame, have a drink." It means that you should make contributions to Anxi, thousands of miles away. When I leave, I have a thousand words to say to you. However, my feelings of parting can only be expressed by raising a glass and drinking. There are many things in my heart, and the meaning here is very profound. What's on my mind is not specifically written here, but it can be understood from the following two descriptions. The third part writes that they will be separated from each other in two distant places. Li Shiyu had to cross Yan Zhishan to stop the enemy, but he stayed in Chang 'an, east of Taibai Mountain. In the future, people will be more worried and miss each other. "Obstacle" means blocking the enemy's blockade, which refers to Juyan fortress (in today's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region). Here, these remote places are used to refer to the distant Anxi. "Yan Zhi", namely Yan Zhishan, also wrote Yan Zhishan. In today's Gansu province, it also refers to Anxi, a distant border. In the Han Dynasty, Huo Qubing attacked the Huns, won a great victory, pursued them, crossed Yan Zhi for more than a thousand miles, pacified the frontier and returned home in triumph. The borrowing of Yanzhishan here is also to wish friends who have traveled to join the army a successful return as soon as possible. "Qin Cheng", Chang 'an City. "Taibai", the mountain name, namely Taiyi Peak in Zhong Nanshan, is in the west of Chang 'an. "Yan Zhibei" is the place where friends leave the army. "East of the Qin Dynasty is too white" refers to Gao Shi's temporary residence. The last two sentences are words of comfort. By the way, although the place you are going to is far from Wan Li, the pain of parting between friends is really hard, but you should relax, don't be depressed because of parting, and make contributions to safeguarding national security. "Look at the heroes of Bao Dao" is a symbolic technique, which means to let Bao Dao exert his strength to realize his ambition.

The whole poem describes the feelings of parting, and there are also scenes of toasting and talking and comforting each other. The feelings are sincere and the tone is high. This just reflects the positive spirit of striving for strength and defending the country in the poems of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.
