Australian poems, such as The Man from Snow River, and country songs, such as Waltz Matilda, contain some words and phrases that are not commonly used but can still be understood by Australians.

Vowels in Australian English can be distinguished by the length of pronunciation. Long vowels include monophthongs and diphthongs.

Most of them are consistent with the tight vowels in RP English, and the pronunciation of the tight vowels is consistent with the centering diphthongs in diphthongs. Short vowels, including only single vowels, are consistent with loose vowels lax vowels in RP English.
