1. The language is plain and simple yet can inspire people. His poems are good at narrative, but he also makes good use of one or two warning sentences to unify the whole poem, achieving the effect of being simple in words and profound in meaning, and showing strange warnings in the ordinary. For example, the first fourteen sentences of "Light Fatty" are all about the generosity of the powerful, and the last two sentences: "It was a drought in the south of the Yangtze River, and the people of Quzhou were cannibals." It is a shocking comparison of two different lives.
The first sixteen sentences of "Buying Flowers" describe the scene of Chang'an's rich and powerful people rushing to buy flowers. The end concludes with the sigh of the farmer: "From one dark flower to another, people from ten households . ”
It is very vigilant in revealing that this luxurious and wasteful life is based on exploitation. Another example is "Take off my clothes and buy the kindness in front of me" in "Chong Fu", "The earth doesn't know how cold it is and people want to be warm, so I don't take away people's clothes to make lichen" and so on. They are all very warning sentences. Liu Xizai's "Art Summary" said: "The common words are easy, the strange words are difficult, this is the first pass of this poem. The strange words are easy, the common words are difficult, this is the key pass of the poem. Xiangshan is often used to find surprises, this is a good place that is not easy to reach. . ”
Second, it focuses on narrative, but also combines narrative, lyricism, and discussion. Bai Shi is good at narrative, but he also combines narrative with lyricism. There are three methods. One is to incorporate emotions into the narrative. Although there are no lyrical sentences in the poem, emotions are overflowing in the narrative, such as "The Charcoal Seller". The second is to use the first-person tone instead of the character's emotion, such as "The White-haired Man in Shangyang" and so on.
The third is to express emotions directly after the narrative, that is, "the final chapter reveals the ambition", such as "Red Thread Carpet" and so on. In addition, the narrative of Bai's poems also has another characteristic, that is, clear context and vivid twists and turns, of which "The Charcoal Seller" is the most outstanding.
3. Bai Juyi is also good at portraying characters. For example, "The Old Man with Broken Arms in Xinfeng", "The Charcoal Seller", "The White-haired Man in Shangyang", etc. are all good at portraying characters with similar fates but different personality characteristics. This is another development of Bai Juyi's poetry art. For example, if you compare Du Fu's "The Military Chariot" with Bai Zhi's "Xinfeng Broken Arm Man", you can see its characteristics.
