This inscription was written by Xie Lingyun at the turn of the ninth winter or the tenth year of the Jin Dynasty (4 13) at the request of Hui Yuan, the Buddhist leader of the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
In May of the eighth year of Yixi, Hui Yuan set up a platform in Lushan to paint Buddha statues, and carved stones in September of the ninth year. Hui Yuan wrote an inscription for the shadow of ten thousand buddhas, and at the same time sent his disciple Daobing to Jiankang (now Nanjing, Jiangsu Province) to ask Xie Lingyun to write an inscription, and Xie was invited to enter the city.
This inscription was written in the form of parallel prose emphasized at that time. Judging from the text structure, this inscription can be divided into two parts. "Bandits are empty and unpredictable." Can be said to be a watershed. The former praises the magnificence and profundity of Buddhism. The latter praised the tranquility and exquisiteness of the Buddha's environment.
At the beginning of the inscription, the method of comparison and contrast was used to promote Buddhism. Set off the "clarity" of Buddha with the "turbidity" of the world. Use the hardships of the world to set off the righteousness of the Buddha. It is precisely because of the turbidity of the world that many people are infected. It is precisely because of the mutual infection that six interests are entangled, nine families have moved repeatedly, and even five people have made a scene, which has achieved karma, equality and prosperity. This cycle, how can we not "bitter root"! However, life is not eternal. Although we don't kill, the four edges are thin and the five yin are flourishing, my brushstroke is "rigid feeling" and "extreme reason". It "moves without hurting silence" and escapes evil, which can make people chaste and strong, and sink and break evil. If life can be wise, I am afraid it is the greatest hope. Who can make this hope succeed? "Take me as God", only Buddhism can play a role. It can make people reach the ideological realm of "I have no self"; It can make people get rid of its falsehood and show its significance; It's refreshing. What a great feat! Why does Xie Lingyun admire Buddhism so much? And what is the purpose of adding this appearance in the form of foil? It turns out that Xie Lingyun has a theory that "reason leads to epiphany" and thinks: "An epiphany is free from this life." In other words, suddenly get rid of delusion and realize the truth. Then if you want to get rid of the bitter roots in life, you can only realize the truth by immediately converting to Buddhism. It is precisely because of this idea that Xie Lingyun reveals his infinite yearning for the realm of Buddhism in his poems about Buddhism.
Buddhism has such magical power, how can people get it? Rationally speaking, it is to believe in Buddhism; Emotionally speaking, we should respect the Buddha statue. Whether the environment in which the Buddha statues are placed is superior or inferior is also a measure of people's piety. Of course, Buddhist disciples also know the truth. If not, why did Hui Yuan put the Buddha statue on the picturesque Lushan Mountain?
Lushan written by Xie Lingyun is another kind of emotion. He doesn't write about the waterfall turbulence of Lushan Mountain, nor does he write about the strange peaks and rocks of Lushan Mountain, but outlines a mysterious and elegant beauty. "By Yan Huilin and Tan Jianjing." Let people stand still, "scatter green into the air and the laser will be sent." Fascinating. Sunny, bright moonlight, here is a harmonious beauty. In this regard, who can not marvel! It is in this beautiful scenery that "the peaks are sparse and the steps flow around", and "the gentle and graceful houses are close together" is built, and the platform is visualized. "Shock wave reflection, lead the moon into the window; If the Buddha has a spirit, it is pleasing here. The beauty of terrain and the piety of Buddha statues constitute a harmonious, solemn, noble and solemn landscape. People here have a sense of "nothing if they die" and "immortality if they are independent" (Su Shi's Former Red Cliff Fu). Xie Lingyun seems to have touched people's feelings, so he comforted them by saying, "Be careful not to make mistakes" and was anxious to "see the opposite and surprise them" because "the style of writing is sharp, time is fleeting, and good times should not be missed.
Xie Lingyun is a master of the school of landscape poetry in China, and his attainments in landscape poetry are very high. Although some places in this inscription seem to be objective descriptions, they actually contain feelings in the scenery. "Sprinkle green with air, and the laser will be sent." Can you feel the scenery? Here and now, don't you think the "passing Cui" and "hair" here have the feeling of Buddha's light? "Shock wave reflection leads the moon out of the window; Do you just think it's a natural and objective record? Do you think it's because of the Buddha statue? It is the author who puts emotion into the landscape that makes it more charming.
Why does Xie Lingyun admire Buddhism so much? This is inseparable from the social background at that time. Buddhism prevailed in the Southern and Northern Dynasties, reaching the nobility. From ordinary people to ordinary people, believing in Buddhism is an elegant fashion. As a charming Xie Lingyun, how can he fall behind? However, the belief in Buddha's spiritual luck can never be regarded as just chasing the wind and fashion. The reason why he did this was related to his experience and the state of mind at that time. After Xie Lingyun was a famous family, he was hit by the duke's position, but he had no real power and little prestige. However, he thought he was brilliant. Although he was respected by the society, he was never reused by the court, so he began to have rebellious psychology. His character is also an arrogant person. In the case that objectivity and subjectivity could not be unified, he escaped from reality and devoted himself to Buddhism, that is, the "epiphany" he advocated to free himself. This is also the ideological root of his writing this inscription at the request of monks with the respect of dignitaries.
This inscription is unique in structure. Generally, when dealing with scenery and emotions, authors usually write about the scenery first, and then express their feelings, which is more fun, just like what most people say, "borrowing scenery to express emotion" and "borrowing scenery to express emotion". Lingyun, on the other hand, is contrary to tradition, expressing emotion first and then writing scenery. Without a solid foundation, I dare not do so. At first, he strongly advocated Buddhism. At first glance, it seems that it has little to do with the establishment of the image, and it is suspected of "digressing". However, while singing praises, he guided people to believe in Buddhism, so he wrote: "Looking at the shadow, knowing the easy, looking for comments, and being impressed beyond the sound and shape. From a distance, the scenery is warm nearby. " Do you want to believe in Buddha and worship Buddha? Right in front of us. How natural it is to draw the Buddha statue. This kind of writing from macro to micro, from far to near, in short, is ingenious. The following expression uses profile technique to write the environment where the Buddha statue is located. Set off the nobility and profundity of Buddhism with a quiet environment. As for what the Buddha statue looks like, it leaves readers room for reverie. This is like the blank of art and the intermission of music, which can achieve the effect of telling better in silence than in sound.
This inscription takes the form of parallel inscriptions. Parallel prose originated in the Han and Wei Dynasties and was written in the Southern and Northern Dynasties. At the same time, this period is also the heyday of parallel prose, which replaced the prose of the pre-Qin and Han dynasties and became an authentic article. This style has its shortcomings: it is rigid in form and adopts intertextual sentence patterns, and often several sentences only show one meaning. But it also has its advantages, it pays attention to antithesis and melody, such as "color because of sound" in the article. It is easy to know by looking at the shadow and find criticism. "Not only is the antithesis steady, but it is catchy and sweet, giving people a musical beauty. As an inscription, it should be handed down to future generations, so it is easy to remember.
