Because God said to Moses, "Tell the rock to bring out water so that the people can have water to drink." Because the people were unbelieving and disobedient, Moses struck the rock with his staff. Although the water came out, God said that Moses did not respect God, so he could not enter the land of Canaan. This story has many spiritual meanings, warning us not to disobey, to firmly believe in God's love, and also warning priests and elders not to go beyond God's will with their own will.
