Poetry is famous for its seven-character quatrains, and its content is mainly lyrical about history. He is the author of Fan Chuan's collected works, the most famous of which is Epanggong Fu.

His representative works include Bo Qinhuai, Spring in the South of the Yangtze River, Red Cliff, and Understanding Jiangting Pavilion. Du Mu is the grandson and son of Prime Minister Du You. He was called "Xiao Du" to distinguish him from Du Fu, and was also called "Du Xiaoli" with Li Shangyin.
