Reflections on Urban Spirit 2 (I): Urban Spirit
A city is to protect a temple. The temple is to remember a person. Now human beings are experiencing a high degree of urbanization and globalization, and the homogenization of cities is becoming more and more serious. Wandering and homesickness have become the common destiny of mankind, and more and more people choose to settle in cities actively or passively. How to know a city and realize a better life in it? In this book, two philosophers visited nine most attractive cities in the world: Jerusalem, Montreal, Singapore, Hongkong, Beijing, Paris, Oxford, Berlin and new york. They not only described the colorful history of each city, but also extracted information from novels, poems, biographies, travel guides, architectural signs and the author's personal experience to demonstrate their views, and discussed how the spirit of each city was reflected in their own politics. By maintaining their unique spirit and personality in the process of globalization, these cities give people living in cities the most important identity. Through reading, we can see how people's pride in the city spirit can resist the homogenization tendency brought about by globalization and curb the spread of nationalism. In recent years, many people have further promoted the reform of equalization of public services, downplayed their household registration status in policy formulation, and promoted the "treatment in the same city" for "outsiders" and "locals" in many specific matters such as education, medical care, old-age care, and house purchase, so as to promote social integration with equal treatment. This is a positive practice to achieve more fairness and benefit all the people, and it is also a humanistic concern to find the lost urban spirit. Of course, the feedback from this is the self-prosperity of the city. A city, where people gather and thrive, is a workplace and spiritual home for people to live a better life. It is neither fair nor private, neither thick nor thin, nor nostalgic, nor does it care about local or foreign places. It expects people to meet and get together, and hopes that people will work hard. Without people, even a beautiful city will decline and be lonely. For example, Detroit in the United States, the once prosperous world automobile city, had to face the tragedy of bankruptcy because of the exhaustion of its industry. Cities should be destinations for people to migrate freely. Because in cities, people's labor income is higher and their living environment is better, and everyone has the opportunity and conditions to realize their beautiful dreams. Of course, it is impossible for the city to give people red envelopes and pay wages every day. In fact, no normal person would expect such a good thing. If this is the case, it will lead to human degradation and depravity. However, cities can provide people with more and better public services. "Educating young children, learning to teach, earning from hard work, getting medical care for the sick, providing for the old and benefiting the weak ..." This is the long-term goal of urban security and the proper meaning of urban prosperity. A city is a collection of different people. It only provides a platform and carrier for people's survival, life, work and development. As a city, we should be fair and inclusive of all people gathered here, respect the value and significance of people's honest work or active life in the city, and appreciate people's contributions and efforts to the prosperity of the city. Cities can only be colorful, rich and colorful, without dignity and humbleness, and never abandon the old, the young and the weak. Even if this reality does exist, it can only be the situation and problems that the city is committed to changing. This requires the integration of cities, winning glory and making people living in cities more friendly and harmonious. Otherwise, any kind of harm to people will cause the division and degradation of the city. However, it cannot be said that in the process of urban development, we have not been kind to everyone who rushes to the city, especially migrant workers. These real urban builders often live on the edge or corner of the city, and contribute to the city but can't share the fruits of urban development. They are even labeled as "wage earners", "migrant workers" and "tramps" and are heavily shut out of the city gate. If one day the "tide of migrant workers" goes away and the "shortage of migrant workers" comes, we will wake up and find that cities cannot live without these city builders for a moment. Without them, it must be factory paralysis, construction site shutdown and garbage accumulation ... The beauty of the city cannot be separated from the hard work of every migrant worker. We usually turn a blind eye and are insensitive, but we just lose the city conscience and become dirty. This is reminiscent of Mr. Hu Shi more than 90 years ago. He once said: "Society is an organic organization, heroes and great men can be immortal, and those who carry water and cook for your home every day, even wipe your back in the bath hall, or even pick the toilet will be immortal." Seeing the scenery and thinking about people really makes this city feel ashamed. Man is the master of the city. If a city, everyone yearns for it, even happens to happen to coincide, desperate to live and work here, where is the burden of this city? Just the glory of this city! This will inject inexhaustible vitality into the city and forever glow with vigorous vitality. We are delighted to see that groups of "new Shanghainese", "new Changsha people", "new Wenzhou people" and "new Dongguan people" have been born. We have reason to believe that the city will have a better tomorrow.

Reflections on the spirit of the city 2 (3): To understand the city, we must first understand its symbolic spirit.
When you are abroad, what words do you use to introduce your hometown to others? If your hometown is in Beijing, you may use words such as "Forbidden City", "Great Wall" and "Capital" to describe Hua Er Yin rooted in the imperial city from the ancient rhyme of thousands of years. If you have lived in a misty and rainy Suzhou since childhood, the white tiles and small bridges are your favorite pictures. Or you like the freedom and wildness, and often gallop in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia and sing loudly. Cattle, sheep and horses are your best childhood playmates ... Different cities have been labeled differently by human beings, thus evolving into cultural symbols and symbolic spiritual existence of cities.
This is somewhat similar to the way humans introduce a stranger, such as tenderness or impatience, avant-garde or stuffy, calm or cheerful. It seems to describe the impression of others in our hearts, but it is actually labeling this person we know. The thinking activity of our brain is to understand this person and locate this person's existence through these tags. The same is true of cities.
The authors of this book, Bei Tannin and Avina de Charette, are both political theorists. Before an academic conference, they talked about the differences between cities, which triggered their determination to write about the spirit of the city. After five years, they cooperated again and studied 13 cities all over the world from the perspective of urban tolerance and identity.
Born in Canada and living in China all the year round, Betanin included Qufu, Qingdao and Chengdu in the book Soul of the City 2. Compared with the grandeur of Beijing and the modernity of Shanghai, these three cities are both familiar and unfamiliar to foreigners, showing different customs.
Shanghai:
Shanghai people give people the impression that they are smart and calculating, which seems to be within their cognitive range. Everyone except Shanghainese is a countryman. They have a unique sense of pride, as if the pioneers of opening up and rapid development have given them the greatest confidence. But in my opinion, this is a very interesting phenomenon. Those arrogant Shanghainese, originally from the countryside, just came to Shanghai first and became what they had expected before, and began to laugh at others.
Qufu:
Qufu is a very special city. No matter whether the dynasty changes or the emperor changes, this city will always be accompanied by unparalleled honor because of its particularity-the birthplace of Confucius, a thinker. Nowadays, cities full of modernity have sprung up one after another. This city with a thousand-year-old core concept combines science and technology with classicism. As the people closest to Confucianism, they have a real pride in cultural protection, especially for the descendants of Confucius. But unfortunately, compared with other regions, their cultural heritage has not been significantly improved.
Qingdao:
Qingdao once existed as a German colony for some time. Until now, when the city fell in the storm, there were always some articles touting the sewers built by the Germans in Qingdao. Germans, on the other hand, are reluctant to mention this history, and more can feel the helplessness from the "Nazi country" from them. In addition, Qingdao is also a city with a long history. As an immortal mountain pursued by ancient emperors, Laoshan Mountain has added a lot of mystery to Qingdao. Since entering the new era, this city has become a new symbol with its climate and perfect coastline.
Chengdu:
Chengdu and Chongqing used to confuse me. These two cities are like twin sisters. "Ease" is the biggest description of the city. Chengdu people have a leisurely and beautiful attitude towards life, perhaps because of the origin of Taoism. In the author's opinion, people here have unfathomable meaning in dealing with people, with a little freedom and relaxation.
Tokyo:
For Tokyo, the first reaction of most people is modernization, metropolis and fast-paced life. The author restores a vibrant Tokyo through the words of Lynn Kogasawara, a Tokyo native. It is no longer a lifeless face submerged by the pressure of life, no longer a small sense of existence that is ignored under the bright lights, but fireworks made by countless lives with different personalities. Tokyo has gathered talents from all over the world and provided extraordinary jobs for tens of thousands of people. Here, the generation of life is different. This is a diversified city.
The author's works, as well as the humanistic London, Dubai, Thessaloniki and so on, are all presented in this book.
But unfortunately, the author only describes the city through other people's descriptions and some ancient prose, which is objective but one-sided and cannot understand the city as a whole.
Reflections on Urban Spirit II (IV): Urban Spirit
From rural areas to cities, from cities to the whole world, human beings are experiencing a high degree of urbanization and globalization, and the homogenization of cities is becoming more and more serious. Wandering and homesickness have become the common destiny of mankind, and more and more people choose to settle in cities actively or passively. We are all urbanized, we can't go back to our hometown, and we can't live without the city. Mark Twain said, "Every day, a person has to walk for miles on the same endless road, squeezing through the noisy crowd, but he can't see a familiar face hole." But this is only one aspect of the city. Loneliness, alienation, fast pace, sense of urgency, sense of crisis, etc. are all pressures that we must bear to stay away from the acquaintance society. On the other hand, we also enjoy the freedom and platform of the city, diverse cultural life and unlimited opportunities. We live in the city, but the city also lives in our hearts. We live in the city every day, walk on the land of the city, breathe its air and feel its breath. The famous poet Davig said: "Cities have their own flavors: Moscow is vodka with ice. Cairo smells of mango and ginger. Beirut smells of sunshine, ocean, smoke and lemon. You can smell the smell of freshly baked bread, cheese and all kinds of charming things everywhere in Paris. Damascus smells of jasmine and dried fruit. In Tunisia, you can smell musk and salt at night. If a city does not have a unique smell, it is absolutely unreliable. " Urban spirit is the social significance of the whole city. Urban spirit is the highest philosophy of the city, which embodies the overall values of the city and the value orientation of urban citizens. In the urban spirit system, it includes not only the value significance of urban existence and development, but also the final positioning of urban development strategy, the expression of urban image, the expression of top-level concept of image, and the interpretation of goals in different stages of urban development strategy. Urban spiritual system is the soul of urban existence. This paper studies the essence, development characteristics, functions, contents and shaping methods of urban spirit system, and discusses how urban spirit can achieve the purpose of reflecting urban characteristics more accurately and effectively. By tracing the history vertically, we can understand the origin and development process of urban spiritual system, understand the present situation of urban spiritual system in China and the measures to be taken in the future development, and provide guiding suggestions for further research. Through the analysis of the effects, contents and shaping principles of different designs of famous cities at home and abroad, the theoretical basis for shaping the urban spiritual system is formed. A country needs a great national spirit, and a city also needs its own urban spirit. The urban spirit plays a great role in the survival and development of the city, with a distinct banner-oriented role and an inexhaustible source of power. Urban spirit, like a banner, embodies the ideological soul of a city, represents the overall image of a city, highlights its distinctive features and leads its future development. If a city has no spirit, there will be no soul, no accurate positioning of core concepts, and no internal cohesion, so that the whole city can unite for development. Basic principles: Urban spirit embodies a city's historical tradition, spiritual accumulation, social atmosphere, values, citizens' quality and many other factors. If these factors are refined and summarized accurately, and positioned by appropriate expressions, the urban spirit can be created. We should follow certain principles to shape the urban spirit scientifically. The construction of urban spirit should follow the principle of "rooted in history, based on reality, advancing with the times and leading the future". The urban spirit is naturally formed in the whole development process of the city, which has the continuity of the same strain and runs through the past, present and future of the city. Only when the urban spirit is rooted in history can it be rich in connotation and deeply rooted; Only based on reality, the image can be vivid and full of vitality; Only by advancing with the times can we inherit the past and lead the future. Building the spirit of the city should follow the principle of "unity of form and spirit and complement each other". The accurate positioning of urban spirit must conform to the objective environment of the city, coordinate with the external image of the city, and adapt to the development requirements of the city, so that the urban spirit and the city itself can be in harmony and complement each other, so as to achieve the state of "unity of form and spirit" and achieve the effect of "complement each other". The principle of "uniqueness and outstanding characteristics" should be followed in building urban spirit. Due to the differences in historical traditions, regional environment, ideological culture and development level, each urban spirit is unique and unique to its own city. To build urban spirit, we must pay attention to excavating and highlighting urban personality, which is an irreplaceable important support for urban spirit. Therefore, whether it is the connotation of urban spirit or the expression of words, we should profoundly reflect our own characteristics and show the unique charm of the city. Every city has its own unique flavor. Every city has its own unique temperament and identity. The desire to experience uniqueness is deeply rooted in our nature. No matter whether you are still drifting or rooted, only by recognizing the city where you live and feeling its uniqueness can urban life be more satisfactory than rural life. But it is precisely because of the different styles of cities that we can create distinctive cultures. Urban spirit is a comprehensive and innovative way of writing, which makes people shine; It's like you're inside! Urban spirit is the soul of a city, the important content of city soft power, and the internal force to promote urban development. Refining the spiritual expression of the city is of great significance for our city to further gather together, improve its taste and shape its image.
Reflections on the spirit of the city 2 (5): the spiritual temperament of a city.
Love a person will choose a city, which is the most common saying of lovers. If you love someone, you love a home. Choose a white-headed man and a dead city. The reason for choosing a city may be related to people, mainly the city where people live.
The ideal of love is to have a home. Where the home is, it is actually where the city is. What we forget easily is the guidance of the city. The taste of the city comes from love and home.
The impression of the city is also edible. Cities are diverse and life is colorful. Every city has its own unique temperament. For example, the beauty of Qingdao written by the author lies not only in its natural landscape of sea, sea and blue sky, but also in its "exotic atmosphere", which makes people jump out of the commonly known life and reminds people of the possibility of being completely different from the present life.
She is quiet, harmonious and beautiful beyond words. Friends around know that Qingdao is a holy place for wedding photography. Tourists come not only for the beautiful mountains and rivers in Qingdao, but also for some caring pilgrims who come to Qingdao for their honeymoon and take wedding photos on the picturesque coastline. The dusk is deep and the sea breeze is blowing gently. On the empty beach, I danced in the wind and danced my most beautiful posture. This city gives you surging waves, just like the waves on the coast, showing the most beautiful side. The taste of the city lies in dribs and drabs. A beautiful appearance is always special.
My city is a small third-rate county. Small is small, but the northern customs are still very strong. During the Spring Festival, the streets are covered with lanterns and colored lights, and the red scenery in the square and colored lights of important buildings are full of festive atmosphere. The appearance of a city is a feeling, and there are many stories in a small town.
Familiarity day after day and strangeness day after day can bring freshness. Speaking of a city, I prefer the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River. Such scattered eaves, such black and white bricks and such graceful little women are pleasing to the eye and very lively.
And I live in the north, where the air and daily life are rough, shouting and talking loudly. In an atmosphere of whispering, I find it abrupt to speak loudly. The characteristics of a city are, in the final analysis, tolerance. Big cities are always easy to accommodate some people, some habits and some differences.
The capital or the magic capital always makes many people flock to it, but the ease of life is a luxury for us ordinary people. We can't afford to live in such an expensive house or drive such an expensive car, but we are still struggling in the city, and the people in small cities are not satisfied with the status quo, but the development of the city cannot suddenly become a magic capital. This is the pace of reform.
Many books describe the development of this city. Why doesn't the process of urbanization advance violently? Because it is not directly proportional to people's lives. Qingdao is like an ideal city, which matches its economic and social conditions. However, the social and economic differences in small counties in the north have stopped us.
We didn't imply that everyone should follow a city with spiritual temperament. I have to say that every city has its own urban connotation. The comfort of a small city, the glory of the magic capital and the culture of Qufu all have similar urban structures, but they also have their own outstanding characteristics. The development of the city, in the true sense, is the development of the economy and the synchronization of people's ideas.
Spirit of the City II does mention many characteristics of the city, and I think the inclusiveness of this book lies in integration. China's humanistic feelings and the creativity of global cities are overwhelmed by some small cities with characteristics at home and abroad. Judging from the global world pattern, integration has swept the world. We are not on an island, but a member of the global village closely connected with other places. This is the trend of the world and people's unconscious choice.
