Why is the newlywed’s bedroom called the “bridal chamber”?

The "bridal chamber" refers to the bedroom of the newlyweds. Among the four major joyous events in life is the "bridal chamber night of flowers and candles". There is also the saying of having a wedding in the wedding customs. There are several legends about the origin of the word "bridal chamber" .

Legend 1:

In ancient times, there was a King Yao who was diligent in government and loved his people. He often came among the people to observe the sufferings of their lives. During an inspection, he saw a deer fairy holding a torch. King Yao fell in love at first sight and began to have unrequited love. So King Yao took his ministers to search everywhere, and finally found the Deer Fairy in a place called Gushe Fairy Cave. At this time, a big python suddenly attacked King Yao. The deer fairy used magic to save King Yao, and staged a scene where a beauty saves a hero.

The two fell in love at first sight and decided to get married. They got married in Gushe Fairy Cave and were committed for life. When the marriage was consummated, a sacred fire appeared on the roof of the cave, shining brightly, so there were terms of "bridal chamber" and "bridal chamber night of flowers and candles".

Legend 2:

During the Yellow Emperor's period, marriage snatching often occurred between tribes, so fights often occurred. This kind of thing seriously destroyed harmony, and of course it should not be allowed to happen. Moreover, as time went by, the conflicts between the tribes became deeper, and the tribes that had finally been unified were about to split again. So Huang Di thought of a way.

All men and women who form a couple will hold a series of ceremonies when they get married. After that, they will be sent to a cave and surrounded by high walls, leaving only one door, so that they can live together in the cave. Forty days, or even three months, build a relationship as a couple. Only those who have held a ceremony and entered the cave are called officially married and recognized by everyone. This is how the bridal chamber came into being.

Legend 3:

During the Qin Dynasty, a person named San Niang was kidnapped into Qin Shi Huang’s Afang Palace. However, these three girls had integrity and were not willing to live like slaves. , was ravaged by others, so he tried to escape and ran all the way to Huashan. At that time, a scholar named Shen Bo also escaped from the persecution of burning books and humiliating Confucian scholars, and also fled to Huashan.

After two refugees met, they fell in love in a difficult environment. They used the cave in the mountain as their wedding room. Their life was difficult but very sweet. Later generations were moved by the story of the three girls who defied power and bravely pursued happiness. The three girls were revered as the Three Holy Mothers, and a shrine of the Three Holy Mothers also appeared in the temple in Huashan. Later, there was the poem "Night of Flowers and Candles in the Bridal Room".

In fact, in the Han Dynasty, the "bridal chamber" did not specifically refer to the newlyweds' bedroom, but to the place where men and women made love. In the late Tang Dynasty, it was gradually extended to the newlyweds' bedroom, and it has been used to this day.
