Creative background:
Du Mu, a poet in the Tang Dynasty, wrote a poem called Wujiang Pavilion. In the autumn of the first year of Song Renzong (1054), Wang Anshi's Zhou Shu was ordered to go to Beijing through the seat of Wujiang Pavilion and Zhou (now Anhui County). In response to Du Mu's comments, he wrote this poem "Pavilion of Wujiang River".
Thoughts and feelings:
This poem starts with the calm analysis of politicians, based on the objective situation of the development of the Chu-Han War, and makes a rational judgment on the ending that cannot make a comeback, showing the courage and wisdom of politicians.

Du Mu criticized Xiang Yu for not being broad-minded enough in his Diaojiangting. If Xiang regroups in Jiangdong again, he may even make a comeback. According to Wang Anshi's own understanding, Xiang Yu's failure is a foregone conclusion. Even if the children of Jiangdong were still there, Xiang could not lead them to make a comeback, thinking that they might not be willing to work for the war again.
At the beginning of the poem, the title is derived from historical facts, and Xiang Yu's failure directly points out that "the situation is hard to return." The turning point of the overlord of Chu was the "Hongmen Banquet", and he failed to kill Liu Bang. By the time of the siege of Gaixia, he was already facing the situation of betraying his relatives and friends.
The biggest factor of Xiang Yu's failure is probably his own stubbornness. Therefore, the article "Mourning for the Warriors" implies such a message. At that time, Xiang Yu had lost the people's hearts, and the weather, geographical location and human harmony were the most important factors, but Xiang Yu had lost it, so it was very difficult and the probability was very low to save the great cause.
Therefore, Wang Anshi further explained in three or four sentences that "Jiangdong children are here today and are willing to make a comeback for you." He made it clear in a pungent tone that even if Xiang Yu really returned to Jiangdong, Jiangdong children would not work for him.
Du and Wang have different views because of their different starting points and positions. Du Mu focuses on carrying forward the spirit of not being afraid of failure, that is, using topics and poets' poems; Wang Anshi, however, assessed the situation, pointed out that Xiang Yu's defeat was fixed and irreversible, and refuted Du Mu's argument, which was a politician's ode to history.
The last rhetorical question in the poem shows the cruelty of history and the vagaries of people's hearts, and also reflects Wang Anshi's unique political vision.
In this poem, Wang Anshi, as a famous politician in the Northern Song Dynasty, brought the innovative spirit in the reform to the epic creation, expressed his political views and questioned his predecessors. This is also an innovation.
This historical criticism was Wang Anshi's transformation from narrative style to lyrical style and finally to argumentative style, which promoted the poetic innovation movement at that time. Wang Anshi, on the other hand, is keen on historical criticism, expanding the content and depth of the epic and having unique political opinions.
Wang Anshi's poems are very hot and cold, but it is the key to success or failure to grasp the hearts of the people, which can be described as hitting the nail on the head.
