Du Mu

About the author:

Du Mu (803-853), a poet of the Tang Dynasty. His courtesy name was Muzhi, a native of Jingzhao Wannian (now Xi'an, Shaanxi). His grandfather Du You was a famous prime minister and scholar in the middle Tang Dynasty. In 828 AD (the second year of Yamato), he became a Jinshi and was awarded the title of Secretary of Hongwenkan. He served as a staff member in other places for many years, and later served as supervisory censor, governor of Huangzhou, Chizhou, and Muzhou. Later, he became Si Xunyuan Wailang, and finally became a scholar in Zhongshushe. He prides himself on his ability to help the world. Most of the poems refer to works about current affairs. The poems that describe the scenery and lyrical feelings are clear and vivid. It is famous for its seven-character quatrains, which have a particularly broad realm and a deep sense of history. For example, "Red Cliff", "Ti Wujiang Pavilion", "Passing the Huaqing Palace", "Moving at Qinhuai", "Qingming", "Jiangnan Spring Quatrains", "Mountain Journey", etc. are all famous works that have been passed down to this day. People call him Xiao Du, and together with Li Shangyin, they are called "Xiao Li Du" to distinguish him from Li Bai and Du Fu. There are twenty volumes of "Collected Works of Fan Chuan" handed down to the world, and eight volumes of "Complete Poems of the Tang Dynasty" containing his poems.
