Stars in Bing Xin's Short Poems

one

The stars shine—

Deep blue space,

Have you ever heard them talk to each other?

In silence,

In the twilight,

They praised each other deeply.

two

Wind!

Don't blow out the candle in my hand,

My home is still at the end of this long dark journey.

three

The sea,

Which star has no light?

What kind of flower has no fragrance?

That time, in my opinion,

No sound of your waves?

four

The flower of success,

People only marvel at her present glory!

However, at the beginning, her bud,

Soaked with tears of struggle,

The blood rain of sacrifice is scattered everywhere.

Stars is Bing Xin's first collection of poems, with 164 short poems. 1922 was serialized in the supplement of Morning Post and published by the Commercial Press in June of the following year. These short poems are short and pithy, with the ideological imprint of the May 4th Movement, which embodies the artistic style of Bing Xin's early poems: fresh language, pure spoken language and natural and smooth tone, completely getting rid of the shackles of the old-style poetry. They are short and capable, don't repeat chanting, depict images carefully, and avoid positive lyricism. Through clever hints and simple philosophical speculation, they contain profound meaning in simple language, which is implicit and meaningful, forming a "starry sky" that was all the rage at that time.

The first song selected above is about the stars in the night sky. The poet was excited by the thought-provoking deep blue space, praised the noble brilliance of the stars with the wonderful imagination of the stars, and aroused people's pure and warm thoughts. The second song is a metaphor, begging the wind not to blow out the candle in your hand, because there is still a long and dark journey ahead. Candles symbolize light and hope. People who explore the road of life in the dark reality need the power of ideals to give them progress. The third song praises the beauty of nature and expresses love for life through the waves of the sea, the light of stars and the fragrance of flowers. The fourth is philosophical speculation: the brilliant flower of success comes from struggle and sacrifice, which shows the vigorous struggle spirit in the May 4th Movement.
