So, how did such a magnificent landscape like Huangguoshu Waterfall come into being? There are different opinions on the cause of Huangguoshu Waterfall. Some people think that it is a typical karst waterfall, formed by a faulted river bed; others think that it was formed by a karst erosion fault - a sinkhole style. Recent research shows that the box-shaped canyon in front of Huangguoshu Falls was originally a cave with falling water. Later, as the cave developed and water eroded, the roof of the cave collapsed, forming a waterfall. Therefore, Huangguoshu Falls was formed by the collapse of the sinkhole. Since the formation process of a waterfall is closely related to the development process of the river where the waterfall is located, the formation process of Huangguoshu Waterfall must be considered in conjunction with the evolution and development history of Baishui River. In this way, the development process of Huangguoshu Waterfall can be roughly divided into seven stages: the former Dou period, the Zhe Dou stage, the Laolongdong stage, the Baishui River stage, the Huangguoshu Flow stage, the Huangguoshu Waterfall stage and the modern cutting stage. Its formation era started from the Miocene Epoch of the Tertiary Period approximately 27 million to 10 million years ago, and continues to this day, experiencing a cyclical evolution process from the surface to the bottom and back to the surface.
