Du Fu's Spring Rain Poems

"Lovely Rain on a Spring Night"

Good rain knows the season, and spring will happen.

Sneak into the night with the wind, moisturizing things silently.

The wild paths are all dark with clouds, but the river boats are only bright with fire.

Looking at the red and wet place at dawn, the flowers are heavy on the official city.

"Joyful Rain on a Spring Night" is a poem written by Du Fu, a poet in the Tang Dynasty. This poem describes the characteristics of spring rain and the scene of night rain in Chengdu with great joy, and enthusiastically praises the spring rain that comes in time and nourishes all things. The poet uses anthropomorphic techniques to describe the spring rain in a subtle, vivid and lifelike way. The artistic conception of the whole poem is elegant, the connotation is quiet, and the poetic and painting scenes are integrated into one. It is a poem about rain that is vivid and unique.

This poem was written in the spring of the second year of the Yuan Dynasty (761) by Emperor Suzong of the Tang Dynasty. After a period of wandering life, Du Fu finally settled in Chengdu, Sichuan due to drought in Shaanxi Province, and began a relatively stable life in Shu. When he wrote this poem, he had settled in thatched cottage in Chengdu for two years. He personally farmed, planted vegetables and flowers, and interacted with farmers. He had a deep affection for the spring rain, so he wrote this beautiful poem describing the rain on a spring night and moistening all things.

This is a masterpiece depicting a rainy scene on a spring night and expressing joy. At the beginning, the word "good" is used to praise "rain". In life, "good" is often used to praise those who do good things. Nowadays, praising rain with "good" has evoked the association of people who do good things. Next, the rain is personified, saying that it "knows the season" and knows how to meet objective needs. Among them, the word "knowledge" is used vividly, which makes the rain come alive. Spring is the season when all things sprout and grow. When it needs rain, it starts to rain. It is indeed "good".
