The original text of Master Huihui's pavilion on an autumn night:
The bright white forest in autumn, the slightly green mountains are quiet. Feel the changes in things while living in Zen, sitting alone with the screen open. The wind and springs are noisy at night, and the moonlight is cold at night. Thank you to Mr. Wangji, I can’t get rid of the worries. Translation and annotations are provided for Master Huohui's Autumn Night in the Mountain Pavilion
Translation The moonlight illuminates the mountains and forests in autumn colors, and the green mountains are so peaceful and quiet. Staying in a Zen room and feeling the changes of all things, one can't help but open the windows and doors when sitting alone. The sound of the wind and the sound of the spring seemed noisy at night, and the cold dew under the moon made the night light cool. I would like to express my sincere greetings to those who have forgotten their memories. I am sorry that the worries of the world have not been cleared away.
Notes 1 Master Hui: Monk Yuan Hui of Dayun Temple. Zan Ning's "Biography of Eminent Monks" said that he "researches human nature carefully and is good at reaching all sects". Chen Ziang got acquainted with him before he became a Jinshi. 2 Jiaojiao: pure and white appearance; innocent appearance. Describe moonlight. "The Book of Songs·Xiaoya·White Horse": "The bright white horse is in that empty valley." 3 Weiwei: vague, distant, quiet appearance. Liang Chenyue of the Southern Dynasty wrote a poem "Liu Zhenren Returns to the Mountain": "There are endless peaks, and the greenery is slightly far away." 4 Zen residence: a place where monks live and practice. Refers to the temple. 5. Xuan screen: window and door screen. 6 Miscellaneous: One is "Absolute". July dew: dew drops under the moonlight. Xiaoguang: night light; moonlight. 8. Forget the machine: Eliminate the ingenuity. It is often used to refer to being indifferent and not fighting against the world. The person who forgets the machine is a noble sentiment that praises the people of Hui Shang for being independent from the world and forgetting tricks and deceit. 9: Organize. An appreciation of Master Hui’s gift to Master Hui in the Mountain Pavilion on an Autumn Night
The content of the poem presented by Master Hui is unknown, so it is speculated that the poetic meaning is related to meditation on an autumn night. Therefore, this gift poem begins with the tranquility of the mountains and forests. "The bright white forest in autumn, the slightly green mountains are quiet." The mountain forest monastery on an autumn night is filled with a secluded Zen atmosphere. The middle two couplets of this poem describe scenery and objects. The couplet reads "I feel the changes in things while living in Zen, and I sit alone with the screen open." Living in this monk's room, I felt the changes in the scenery and the passage of seasons. Because I was extremely upset, I couldn't help but open the door, sit alone and contemplate and fantasize. This points out the state of Zen enlightenment of Master Hui. Meditation makes people calm and allows wisdom to emerge. The neck couplet "The wind and springs are noisy at night, the moonlight is cold at night" depicts a quiet and lonely state, which is very poetic and Zen-like. In the last two sentences, "Thank you so much for forgetting the machine, I can't get rid of the worldly worries." I lament that people in the world cannot forget the machine like Hui Shang and suffer from the troubles of the world. It is really helpless and pitiful. It expresses the poet's feelings for Hui Shang when he came to Qingming. The pursuit of a realm.
The structure of this poem is extremely delicate. From beginning to end, it is natural and calm. The description of scenes and people is integrated into one. Chen Zi'ang also has a poem "I went to the south tower of Kaiyuan Temple with Wang Yuan after the rain to reward Master Hui for sitting alone in the mountain pavilion." The content is related to this poem and can be referenced.
