Poetry has different categories, and Wang Li, a famous scholar in ancient China, thinks that the categories are more complicated. Classical poetry is the general name of poetic style as opposed to metrical poetry. In the eyes of people in the Tang Dynasty, Yu Xin from the Book of Songs to the Southern and Northern Dynasties is ancient. The sentence patterns of ancient poetry are generally three-character, four-character, five-character, six-character and seven-character, and they don't pay attention to metrical patterns such as antithesis and leveling, so they rhyme freely. It can be said that all poems that are not bound by the rhythm of modern poetry are ancient poems. Modern poetry, also known as "metrical poetry", also includes metrical poetry and quatrains. It is required to limit the space, stress the rhyme, discuss the level tone and use antithesis. Rhyme is famous for its strict meter. Metric poems have four characteristics: (1) each poem is limited to eight sentences, with 40 words in five laws and 56 words in seven laws; (2) Smooth rhyme; (3) stipulate the level of each sentence; (4) Every article must have antithesis. There is also a kind of metrical poem with more than eight sentences, called long law. Quatrains are half as few as metrical poems. Seven words is a seven-word sentence, or seven words per line. Five-character ancient poems are referred to as five ancient poems for short.
