Ancient poems describing temples

Returning to the West Lake in the evening and looking back at the Gushan Temple to give gifts to the guests

Tang Dynasty · Bai Juyi

Liuhu Songdao Lotus Temple, returning to the temple in the evening.

The rain is heavy in the low mountains of Luju, and the palm leaves and water are cool.

Smoke waves shake the blue sky, and the buildings and halls are scattered against the setting sun.

When you reach the shore, please look back. Penglai Palace is in the middle of the sea.

Appreciation

"Liuhu Songdao Lotus Temple, Late Movement Returning to the Radius and Leaving the Dojo". Although these two sentences are just an explanation of "returning late from West Lake", they are very skillful in their writing. Let’s compare it with modern cinematography techniques. First is the panorama: the ripples of Liuhu Lake. Then the camera zooms forward: Songdao and Lotus Temple are reflected. Finally, there are two sub-shots: on the lake, it is almost evening, and the boatman is swinging the "return radius", preparing to pick up the guests to return; in the temple, the poet is walking out of the ashram with the "guests", preparing to "return late". This writing method has clear layers and orderly master and slave, giving people a clear and lively feeling. Secondly, these two sentences use characteristic modifying words and "metaphorism" in five places, thereby increasing the texture and characteristics of the scenery and expressing the poet's joy about it. Just imagine, if we just say "there is a temple on the mountain of Gushan in West Lake, and we go back to the temple at night", it will be boring and cannot describe the characteristics of Gushan Temple and the joy of the poet. Poetry is valuable and interesting, and its meaning should not be straightforward. Without the poet's careful arrangement and appropriate modification, it would not be as immersive as reading it.

The first two sentences start from the big picture and move from the scenery to the people; the next two sentences start from the small area and move from the people to the scenery. "The orange trees are low in the mountains and the rain is heavy, and the palm leaves are in the cool water." This is what the poet saw on his way back. Luju means loquat, and Codonopsis means palm. The loquat is full of fruits and has golden green leaves. It is so lovely in the first place. After the mountain rain, the fragrance is overflowing, and even the fruit branches are weighed down; the word "heavy" expresses how much joy the poet feels about it. ! The tall palm trees have large leaves, like cooling fans covering the path. The broad leaves tremble in the breeze after the rain, as if they also feel the refreshing water breeze. The word "cool" reveals how much pleasure the poet feels! A good painting must first see whether it can express typical objects; a good poetry must first see whether it can integrate the author's spirit into the painting. These two sentences can be said to be the fusion of beautiful scenery and refreshing emotions, and the combination of poetry and painting. They are like emotions and scenery, and are inseparable.

The poet stepped onto the boat and sailed on the lake. The scene at this time was: on the wide lake, the gentle cold smoke seemed to be there or not, the blue lake waves were the same color as the sky, Therefore, it is said that "the waves of smoke are shaking and the sky is blue." The word "dang" makes people feel like a fairy, like rising into the blue sky, and writes a refreshing and leisurely feeling. Looking back at Gushan Temple: "The buildings and halls are staggered and lean against the setting sun." The word "staggered" describes the unique scenery of the Yuguan towers and halls built according to the height of the mountain, which makes people think of the scattered eaves and teeth, each embracing the terrain. The magnificent scene; coupled with the sunset, the red bricks and green tiles, and the golden light are extinguished, the Buddha's land is really like a fairyland, so the poet expressed his heartfelt emotion: "Please look back when you reach the shore, Penglai Palace is in the middle of the sea." ──He started writing "Return" With the theme of "Wang Gushan presents gifts to all guests", the work comes to an abrupt end. There is Penglai Pavilion in Gushan Temple. The two are integrated without any trace. They add extra rhymes and overtones, making the poetic and picturesque scene of Gushan Temple linger in the minds of readers for a long time.
