I would like to know the definitions of terms related to literary classification in British and American literature.

1. Free verse is a type of poetry. It originated in Europe at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Its body structure is free, and there are no certain specifications for the number of paragraphs, lines, and words; the language has a natural rhythm without rhyme.

2. The sonnet is a short lyrical poem originated from Italian folk. It was popular throughout Europe in the early Renaissance. Its structure is very strict and is divided into upper and lower parts. The upper part is eight lines. The lower paragraph has six lines, each line has eleven syllables, and the rhyme arrangement is: abba abba, cdc ded. The structure of Shakespeare's sonnets is more rigorous. He divided the fourteen lines into two parts. The first part is three four lines, and the second part is two lines. Each line has ten syllables. The rhyme is: abab, cdcd, efef,gg. This format later became known as "Shakespearean" or "Elizabethan". For poets, the more restrictive the structure of a poem, the more difficult it is to express emotion. However, Shakespeare's sonnets are unrestricted and free-spirited. Just like his plays, the language of his poems is also full of imagination and emotion.

3. Allegory means implicit language and is a genre of literary works. It is often satirical or admonishing in nature, using false stories or personification to illustrate a certain truth or lesson.

4. Blank poetry: a type of English metrical poetry. Each line is composed of five long and short meter steps - ten syllables. The number of lines in each line is arbitrary and there is no rhyme. The foot types all adopt iambic pentameter. Poetry that does not rhyme is called blank verse or white body poetry. Often used in drama and narrative poetry.

5. Legend refers to a story with a bizarre plot or unusual character behavior.

6. Epic is a solemn literary genre whose content is folklore or long narrative poems praising the achievements of heroes. The themes it involves can include historical events, nations, religions or legends.

7. Elegy is a poem written to the deceased.

8. Epigrams, satirical poems, and humorous sayings, I think, are short and concise sentences that serve as warnings.

9. Rhyming poetry, I think it is rhyming poetry, which is different from blank poetry.

Ode and narrative ballad, I don’t know exactly what it means~~~
