1. "Inscription on the Humble Room" by Liu Yuxi of the Tang Dynasty
If the mountain is not high, it will be famous if there are immortals. Water does not have to be deep. This is a humble house, but I am virtuous. The moss marks are green on the upper steps, and the grass color is green on the curtains. Talk and laugh with ru, no contacts STOMATOLOGY. You can tune the plain Qin and read the Golden Sutra. There are no messy ears of silk and bamboo, and there is no laborious shape of case documents. Zhugelu in Nanyang, Yunting in Western Shuzi. Confucius said: What is so shameful?
Translation
A mountain does not lie in its height. If you have gods, you will be famous. Water does not depend on its depth, but when there is a dragon, it appears to have aura. This is a simple house, but I (the person who lives in it) have good moral character (so it doesn’t feel simple).
The moss marks that have grown up to the steps are green in color; the green grass is reflected in the curtain. The people who come here to chat and laugh are all knowledgeable scholars. The people who interact with people who have no knowledge can usually play the elegant guqin and read the Buddhist scriptures written in gold. There is no sound of music to disturb the ears, and no official documents to make the body tired. There is Zhuge Liang's thatched cottage in Nanyang, and there is a pavilion like Yangtze Cloud in Western Shu. Confucius said: "What's so crude about this?"
2 "On the Love of Lotus" by Zhou Dunyi
The flowers of land and water are very lovely. Tao Yuanming of Jin Dynasty only loved chrysanthemums. Since Li Tang, the world is very love peony. I only love the lotus that emerges from the mud but is not stained; it is clear in the ripples without being demonic; it is straight in the middle and straight in the outside; it does not creep or branch; its fragrance becomes clearer from a distance; its pavilion is clean and planted; it can be viewed from a distance but not played with.
I say chrysanthemum, the flower that represents seclusion; peony, the flower that represents wealth; lotus, the flower that represents the gentleman. Alas! The love of chrysanthemum is rarely heard of after Tao. Who can share the love of the lotus? The love of peony is suitable for everyone.
Translation
There are many herbaceous and woody flowers on water and land that are worthy of love. Tao Yuanming of the Jin Dynasty only loved chrysanthemums. Since Li's Tang Dynasty, most people have loved peonies. What I like is that the lotus grows out of the accumulated mud but is not polluted, and does not look glamorous after being washed by clear water. (Its stem) is straight in the middle and has no vines or branches. The aroma spreads more fragrantly and stands straight and clean in the water. (People) can admire (lotus) from a distance, but cannot play with it easily.
I think the chrysanthemum is the hermit among flowers; the peony is the rich and noble among flowers; and the lotus is the gentleman among flowers. well! Love of chrysanthemums is rarely heard of after Tao Yuanming.
Who else has the same love for lotus as me? Of course there are a lot of people who love peonies!
