Appreciation of Li Shangyin's Short Message to Friends in the North on a Rainy Night

I. Appreciation

Notes for Friends in the North on a Rainy Night is a lyric quatrain written by Li Shangyin, a poet in the late Tang Dynasty, to his wife (or friend) in Chang 'an and a foreign land in Bashu. It is the poet's reply to each other. The first two sentences of this poem, with questions and answers and descriptions of the immediate environment, illustrate the lonely feelings and deep thoughts for his wife.

The last two sentences imagine the joy of meeting again in the future and compare with the loneliness tonight. This poem is improvised, showing the twists and turns of the poet's feelings in an instant. The language is concise, and there is no trace of modification in the wording and sentence making.

Unlike most of Li Shangyin's poems, which are rich in rhetoric, exquisite in allusions and good at symbolism, this poem is simple and natural, and also has the artistic characteristics of "deep sustenance and gentle wording". This poem is ingenious in conception, ups and downs, shallow in meaning, short in words and long in feelings, and has implicit power.

Li Shangyin (about 8 13-858), born in western Henan (xi) and Fan Nan, born in Xingyang, Zhengzhou (now Xingyang, Henan), was a famous poet in the late Tang Dynasty, and was also called "Little Du Li" with Du Mu, Li Shangyin and Li He.

Because the style of poetry and prose is similar to Duan Hewen of the same period, and all three of them rank sixteenth in the family, it is also called "Thirty-six Style". In the 11th year of Tang Yuanhe (8 16), Li Shangyin was about three years old and went to Zhejiang with Li Si. Li Si died before he was ten years old. Li Shangyin had to go back to China with his mother.

Live a hard and poor life. At home, Li Shangyin is the eldest son, so he also bears the responsibility of supporting the portal. Li Shangyin mentioned in his article that he worked as a "bookseller" when he was a teenager, that is, copying books for others to make money to supplement his family. Li Shangyin "chanting at the age of five, writing an inkstone at the age of seven".

After returning to my hometown, I learned Confucian classics from an uncle who was proficient in the Five Classics and elementary school. Sixteen-year-old, named after being good at ancient Chinese. Besides, he writes beautiful work letters and good articles.
