If it can be generally said that19th century European "elegant" culture attached importance to poetic discourse, rather than irregular practices in daily language, then walt whitman's Leaves of Grass is an attempt to endow American daily language with poetic value. Whitman's poems contain words that do not conform to the tradition of European poetics, but they are still declared as poems to show that the liberal and democratic American country has the natural beauty equivalent to the most elegant poems. Leaves shows the beauty of this nation by including all kinds of words and observations in his epic projects, although this inclusiveness also means criticizing the projects undertaken by the works. The ambitious degree of this collection threatens the identity and uniqueness of the literary text itself. Just like a country with unclear boundaries and institutions, a work aimed at expressing this inclusive democratic poetic voice challenges the necessary formal uniqueness, which will make Kyle a form of literary discourse. As a result, Leaves must solicit the voluntary participation of readers in order to realize the project it undertakes. Whitman's poetry requires readers to constantly update their words and give it new poetic meaning, thus reaffirming that it is a prosperous and free American poem.
The cultural project of this poem was announced in "Starting from Paumanok". The original title of this poem is "Prototype Leaf", which is a general introduction to the whole leaf. In this book, the poet takes his birthplace as the starting point of his poetry, and provides a list of raw materials that have hardly formed, which are the materials that make up poetry and the country. He linked his personal vision with the development of the United States, and this combination of personal, natural progress and national construction enabled him to "create a new world":
